YouTube gave its creators access to Google DeepMind’s newest AI model, Veo 3 Fast, which enables them to create a video from a photo and produce a song with dialogue, among other features.

“We’ve partnered with Google DeepMind to bring a custom version of their most powerful video generation model, Veo 3, to YouTube. Veo 3 Fast is designed to work seamlessly in YouTube shorts for millions of creators and users, for free,” YouTube said in a blog post. “It generates outputs with lower latency at 480p so you can easily create video clips – and for the first time with sound – from any idea, all from your phone.”

The AI tool allows users to perform a variety of functions including turning a photo into a video, adding a stylized look to videos, adding object and props to a scene and creating song remixes from dialogue at the push of a button. YouTube also launched an AI-powered assistant which can help creators produce even higher-quality videos.

“Every creator wants to know how their videos are landing and how to continue growing, so meet Ask Studio, an AI-powered partner to help Creators answer their most important questions,” YouTube said. “This conversational chat tool provides quick insights and ideas to help you understand your analytics, community and get new inspiration… Our vision is for Ask Studio to become the ultimate creative partner for every Creator – a trusted companion that Creators turn to first.”

The heavy promotion of AI tools is somewhat surprising from YouTube as earlier this summer, the platform cracked down on AI-generated content to reduce the amount of low-quality AI videos on the site. It made it so that “inauthentic” and “unoriginal” content cannot be monetized on the platform, in the same way users who upload stolen content do not receive money.

While the crackdown seemed to be an attempt to remove all AI-generated content from the site, this is clearly not the case given how the company has pushed Veo3 to creators. Instead, it seems that YouTube is happy to have AI content on the platform, as long as it has some level of creativity to it. YouTube claims that the majority of its creators already use AI in some capacity.

“Just as they led the way with streaming, creators are at the forefront of GenAI creation, with the low barrier to entry allowing them to experiment in their creation process. In our global survey, Radius found that a remarkable 92% of creators are already using GenAI tools, with 74% of respondents saying they know a great deal or a fair amount about the technology,” YouTube said.

Unlike the entertainment industry as a whole, it seems that the world of content creation has embraced AI. However, whether YouTube is leading the way for the rest of the industry or heading down a path on its own remains to be seen.
