In July 2025, Google signed a $2.4 billion deal for a nonexclusive licence to the technologies developed by Windsurf, a cutting-edge AI startup co-founded by Varun Mohan. Along with the deal, Mohan and several core members of his team joined Google DeepMind, marking one of the most high-profile movements in the AI talent landscape this year. This landmark agreement not only validated Windsurf’s innovation in AI-powered software development but also brought global attention to Mohan’s exceptional trajectory. His journey from a math Olympiad enthusiast in high school to an MIT-trained engineer and AI entrepreneur is a story rooted deeply in education,…

Why does the straw look bent in a glass of water? Why is the world distorted when looking through a lens or a glass marble ball? How can light get trapped in transparent surfaces? We formulate Snell’s law, an incredibly simple equation to answer these questions. About the course: This course aims to give an overview of basic and state-of-the-art methods of rendering. Offline methods such as ray and path tracing, photon mapping and many other algorithms are introduced and various refinement are explained. The basics of the involved physics, such as geometric optics, surface and media interaction with light…

Hierarchical networks replace traditional tokenization pipelines by dynamically learning segmentation strategies, achieving better performance and scalability across various languages and modalities. Despite incredible progress in language models (LMs) in recent years, largely resulting from moving away from specialized models designed for specific tasks to general models based on powerful architectures (e.g. the Transformer) that learn everything from raw data, pre-processing steps such as tokenization remain a barrier to true end-to-end foundation models. We introduce a collection of new techniques that enable a dynamic chunking mechanism which automatically learns content — and context — dependent segmentation strategies learned jointly with the…

Voice AI is changing the way we use technology, allowing for more natural and intuitive conversations. Meanwhile, advanced AI agents can now understand complex questions and act autonomously on our behalf. In Part 1 of this series, you learned how you can use the combination of Amazon Bedrock and Pipecat, an open source framework for voice and multimodal conversational AI agents to build applications with human-like conversational AI. You learned about common use cases of voice agents and the cascaded models approach, where you orchestrate several components to build your voice AI agent. In this post (Part 2), you explore…

As quickly as that, the Getty Images v Stability AI trial has come and gone. Having watched the trial unfold, here’s my commentary on what happened and where it leaves UK law. Getty brought a claim in the England and Wales High Court against Stability AI for primary copyright, secondary copyright, database, and trademark infringement. Getty claimed that Stable Diffusion was trained on vast quantities of Getty-licensed images without permission and could reproduce those images on request. Sometimes the images produced also included the Getty watermark, although both parties seemed to accept that this was unintentional. This trial was full…

We learn how to compute where a ray of light intersects a sphere. The advantages of parametric equations over the classical implicit formulations (in this context) are also discussed. Turns out there is some beauty to be seen and appreciated during the process! About the course: This course aims to give an overview of basic and state-of-the-art methods of rendering. Offline methods such as ray and path tracing, photon mapping and many other algorithms are introduced and various refinement are explained. The basics of the involved physics, such as geometric optics, surface and media interaction with light and camera models…

The study identifies a linear reasoning bottleneck in Visual-Language Models and proposes the Linear Separability Ceiling as a metric to evaluate it, suggesting targeted alignment rather than improved representation learning as a solution. Most state-of-the-art Visual-Language Models (VLMs) are seemingly limited by the linear separabilty of their visual embeddings on abstract reasoning tasks. This work investigates this “linear reasoning bottleneck” by introducing the Linear Separability Ceiling (LSC), the performance of a simple linear classifier on a VLM’s visual embeddings. We find this bottleneck is widespread and stems not from poor perception, but from failures in the language model’s reasoning pathways.…

Fraud detection remains a significant challenge in the financial industry, requiring advanced machine learning (ML) techniques to detect fraudulent patterns while maintaining compliance with strict privacy regulations. Traditional ML models often rely on centralized data aggregation, which raises concerns about data security and regulatory constraints. Fraud cost businesses over $485.6 billion in 2023 alone, according to Nasdaq’s Global Financial Crime Report, with financial institutions under pressure to keep up with evolving threats. Traditional fraud models often rely on isolated data, leading to overfitting and poor real-world performance. Data privacy laws like GDPR and CCPA further limit collaboration. With federated learning…
