Trapit Bansal, a former OpenAI researcher, has officially joined Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL)—Meta’s ambitious unit aimed at developing artificial general intelligence (AGI). The lab, launched by Mark Zuckerberg, seeks to compete with top AI players like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic. Bansal brings deep technical expertise, with dual degrees in mathematics and statistics from IIT Kanpur, and a PhD in computer science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he specialized in meta-learning, deep learning, and natural language processing (NLP).

From OpenAI to Meta: Trapit Bansal’s Journey in Advancing AI Reasoning

Bansal’s career began in 2012 at Accenture in Gurugram, followed by a research assistant role at IISc Bangalore, where he worked on Bayesian modelling. His academic journey includes research stints and internships at tech giants such as Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI, focusing on deep learning, NLP, reinforcement learning, and knowledge graphs.

In 2022, Bansal joined OpenAI full-time and collaborated with co-founder Ilya Sutskever on reinforcement learning for reasoning. He co-developed OpenAI’s first AI reasoning model, o1, which laid the foundation for ChatGPT’s internal reasoning abilities. His transition to Meta is seen as a major strategic gain for MSL, especially as the company has yet to publicly release a reasoning-focused AI model.

Meta’s Aggressive Talent Hunt Heats Up AGI Race with OpenAI

Meta’s superintelligence team is co-led by former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang and ex-GitHub CEO Nat Friedman. Reports from Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal suggest Meta is aggressively recruiting from competitors, with some compensation packages reportedly reaching $300 million over four years. Though the specifics of Bansal’s deal are undisclosed, insiders believe it includes significant stock and access to compute resources.

This aggressive hiring has stirred tension in the AI industry. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman claimed Meta offered “$100 million signing bonuses,” though he insisted none of OpenAI’s “best people” left. However, alongside Bansal, several other researchers have recently exited OpenAI for Meta, signalling otherwise. Bansal’s expertise in AI reasoning and learning is expected to accelerate Meta’s AGI roadmap and contribute significantly to the development of its next-generation large language models.

Summary:

Trapit Bansal, a former OpenAI researcher, has joined Meta Superintelligence Labs to advance its AGI efforts. With a strong background in AI reasoning, Bansal’s move marks Meta’s aggressive talent acquisition strategy. His expertise is expected to accelerate Meta’s development of advanced large language models, intensifying competition with OpenAI and others.
