Sam Altman’s OpenAI has launched the next phase of its global AI for Impact Accelerator Program in India, extending support to 11 chosen nonprofit organizations. As part of this initiative, these groups will receive a new round of API credits to help integrate advanced AI into their missions. This effort falls under the broader OpenAI Academy framework. With this latest move, the total amount of technical grants provided through the program now stands at $150,000.
The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with The Agency Fund, Tech4Dev, and Turn.io. It offers nonprofit organizations access to technical guidance, opportunities for peer-to-peer learning, and early use of OpenAI’s advanced tools.
Now part of the OpenAI Academy framework, the initiative was originally launched on a global scale and remains focused on empowering purpose-driven organizations that are building practical AI solutions.
Pragya Misra, Policy & Partnerships Lead, OpenAI India, said, “India has shown how AI can drive inclusive innovation at scale. These organizations are solving some of the country’s most complex challenges with ingenuity and empathy. The AI for Impact Accelerator – now part of OpenAI Academy – is our way of learning from them, while ensuring frontier technology is being shaped by and in service of real communities. This work reflects the spirit of the India AI Mission and reaffirms OpenAI’s commitment to meaningful impact.”
The India batch features nonprofits that have adopted OpenAI technologies within their platforms to deliver large-scale impact for underserved populations.
The 11 selected nonprofit organizations include Rocket Learning, Noora Health, Udhyam, Precision Development, Digital Green, Youth Impact, Educate Girls, i-Stem, Pinky Promise, Myna Mahila Foundation, and IDinsight. According to OpenAI, many of these groups have already begun applying its technology in their initiatives. The program also complements the broader objectives of the IndiaAI Mission.
OpenAI has been making headlines recently as it pushes forward with bold initiatives to enhance the everyday utility of its generative AI models. The company, led by Sam Altman, aims to transform its technology into a powerful Super Assistant rather than just a standard chatbot. Additionally, OpenAI has unveiled ambitious plans for a new companion device, being co-designed in collaboration with former Apple design head Jony Ive.
