Google’s Gemini is currently the default assistant on smartphones running Android 15. This might soon change, as Perplexity is in talks with Samsung and Motorola—two major original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), according to a report by Bloomberg published on April 17. The report highlights that Perplexity has already reached an agreement with Motorola, while discussions with Samsung—one of the world’s biggest Android smartphone makers—are still ongoing.
An official announcement regarding this matter could arrive as early as April 24, when Motorola is set to host a launch event for its next-generation foldable Razr smartphones. On these upcoming devices, Perplexity could offer a new look and feel, tailored specifically to the foldable form factor. Meanwhile, the deal with Samsung is said to be in the early stages.
This would be an interesting move from Samsung, considering the brand’s close-knit partnership with Google. Notably, Samsung has also invested in Perplexity through its investment wing, Next, and is expected to make another round of investment in the coming months—potentially doubling Perplexity’s valuation. It will be interesting to see if Motorola and Samsung will make Perplexity the default assistant or will let users choose between the two while setting up the smartphone.
Perplexity has garnered significant interest among mobile users due to its well-optimised user interface that mimics a search engine. Currently powered by various models from OpenAI and Anthropic, it offers the best of both web and generative AI search.
By becoming the default assistant on Samsung and Motorola smartphones, Perplexity could attract more interest from Android users. The app is currently available for both Android and iOS devices free of charge. However, those seeking advanced features can subscribe to Perplexity Pro, which unlocks additional capabilities for $20 a month—similar to ChatGPT Plus.
For anyone looking for a new assistant, Perplexity is a solid pick, especially if you’re looking for something that can handle web browsing and generate information using AI.
