Perplexity AI voice assistant launches on iPhone; here's how to use it
Perplexity AI voice assistant launches on iPhone

In a major leap for iOS users, Perplexity AI has officially launched its advanced voice-activated AI tool, Perplexity Assistant, on iPhones. This new assistant is designed to enhance user convenience by managing a wide range of everyday tasks, including controlling media, setting schedules, handling emails, and providing intelligent, real-time responses. Unlike traditional AI assistants like Siri or Google Gemini, Perplexity Assistant boasts deeper integration with Apple’s native ecosystem, allowing for smoother multitasking and broader functionality. Its ability to synthesize information, provide contextual answers, and adapt to user preferences marks a significant evolution in mobile voice assistant technology for iPhone users.

How to set up and use Perplexity AI voice assistant on iPhone

Update the Perplexity app: Ensure the Perplexity app is updated to the latest version available on the App Store.Grant microphone access: Allow the app to access the microphone for voice command functionality.Activate the assistant: Tap the voice icon in the input box within the app interface to start interacting with Perplexity Assistant.Save interactions: All conversations are saved as “Threads” in the app, which can be accessed through the Threads Library.Create shortcuts: Users can add shortcuts to Perplexity Assistant on the iPhone’s home screen or lock screen for quick access.

Key features of Perplexity Assistant on iPhones

Perplexity Assistant distinguishes itself by its ability to perform a wide range of tasks that can be executed directly within the app. Here’s what the assistant can currently do on your iPhone:
Media control:

Music and podcasts: Users can ask the assistant to play specific songs or podcasts, and Perplexity Assistant will handle the task via Apple Music, the default music and podcast app on iOS devices. While it does not support third-party music apps yet, Perplexity is reportedly working on integrating support for Gmail and Google Calendar in future updates.

Email and communication:

Email management: With Perplexity Assistant, iPhone users can send emails via Apple Mail using voice commands. The assistant will also allow users to compose emails, check their inboxes, and send replies, making it a useful tool for managing communications without needing to manually type messages.

Scheduling and meetings:

Calendar integration: Perplexity Assistant can integrate with Apple Calendar, helping users review their schedules, set up meetings, and add new events to their calendar—all through voice commands. This makes it easier to stay organized and manage tasks hands-free.

Navigation and location:

Apple Maps integration: To help users find locations or get directions, Perplexity Assistant uses Apple Maps as the default navigation tool. By simply asking for an address or location, users can quickly retrieve directions or location details, making it a helpful tool when traveling or navigating unfamiliar areas.

What Perplexity Assistant cannot do

Despite the convenience it offers, Perplexity Assistant does have its limitations. Some of the key functions that the voice assistant cannot perform on iPhones include:
Control over system settings:

Flashlight and brightness control: The assistant cannot turn on the flashlight, adjust the screen brightness, or manage other system-level settings such as low-battery mode.Volume control and alarms: Users are unable to ask Perplexity Assistant to adjust the device’s volume or set alarms. This is primarily due to restrictions in the Apple SDK (Software Development Kit) that prevent developers from accessing certain system functionalities for third-party apps.

Limited app integrations:

While Perplexity Assistant supports Apple’s native apps, it does not yet support third-party apps outside the Apple ecosystem (for instance, services like Gmail and Google Calendar, which Perplexity AI is working on integrating in the future). Therefore, users of such apps may find the assistant’s capabilities limited for some tasks.

What’s next for Perplexity Assistant

As of now, Perplexity Assistant provides a promising set of features aimed at improving convenience for iPhone users. The app’s deep integration with Apple’s ecosystem ensures that it can handle essential tasks related to media, communication, and scheduling. However, Perplexity AI is continuously working on expanding the assistant’s capabilities.
In upcoming updates, the company plans to add support for popular services like Gmail and Google Calendar, which will significantly broaden its usability. Additionally, Perplexity AI is exploring ways to bypass the limitations imposed by the Apple SDK to enable functions such as adjusting volume, controlling the flashlight, and setting alarms—all features that would make Perplexity Assistant even more functional.
