Ask Perplixity users on X/Twitter are going bonkers generating videos of a widely followed influencer on the platform converting their static profile picture to video with the user gorging on chai, samosa, pani puri, masala dosa, sambar, and what not. The AI company announced the feature on their profile much to the delight of Twitteratis. The videos generated come with audio as well.

However the Text-to-Video tool on X/Twitter doesn’t entertain all prompts. One user asked the Pereplexity prompter to create a video of Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir begging for food from Donald Trump inside White House. The AI refused the prompt without stating any reason. Among several other prompts it also refused the prompt “Create a video of a modern Indian mom giving cookies from ABCD to her kids.” It did generate video of a sponge and a starfish running in bikini bottom yelling “follow greg on X”, upon the user’s request, among several other bizarre prompts. Users can also use Ask Perplexity AI to animate static pictures.

Developed and co-founded by Andy Konwinski, Johnny Ho, Denis Yarats, and IIT Madras alumni Aravind Sirinivas in 2022, Perplexity AI was dubbed ‘Google Search Killer.’ Aravind Srinivas, the CEO of the company has earlier had stints with rival AI companies including Google DeepMind, OpenAI, and Google Brain. With around 700 employees, Perplexity AI is currently valued at $14 billion. The AI firm has backing from Jeff Bezos, Nvidia, and others. The company came under fire in June 2024 when Forbes slammed Perplexity for stealing its proprietary content without citing the source. In the following October, The New York Post issued a cease and desist notice to the company for similar allegations. In the same year in June, a Wired investigation revealed that the AI firm did not respect the robots (dot)txt standards or Robot Exclusion Protocols on websites, thereby scraping content illegitimately.
