The company has formally established an entity in India and begun hiring a local team.
The New Delhi office will allow OpenAI to partner more closely with the government, developers, businesses, and academic institutions under the IndiaAI Mission, while also tailoring features and tools to the needs of Indian users.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said, “The level of excitement and opportunity for AI in India is incredible. India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader—amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the IndiaAI Mission.”
He added that setting up the first office and building a local team marks a crucial step in OpenAI’s commitment to making advanced AI more accessible across the country, and to developing AI for India, with India.
The announcement has been welcomed by the Indian government.
Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, said, “OpenAI’s decision to establish a presence in India reflects the country’s growing leadership in digital innovation and AI adoption. With strong investments in digital public infrastructure, AI talent, and enterprise-scale solutions, India is uniquely positioned to drive the next wave of AI-led transformation. As part of the IndiaAI Mission, we are building the ecosystem for trusted and inclusive AI, and we welcome OpenAI’s partnership in advancing this vision to ensure the benefits of AI reach every citizen.”
New data released by OpenAI highlights India’s strong momentum in AI adoption:
India is ChatGPT’s second-largest market by users and one of its fastest-growing.
Weekly active users have increased by more than four times over the past year.
The country ranks among the top five developer markets on OpenAI’s platform.
India has the largest student population on ChatGPT worldwide.
The announcement of the new office follows several India-focused rollouts.
OpenAI recently introduced ChatGPT Go, a low-cost subscription tier priced at ₹399 per month with UPI payments. It also expanded OpenAI Academy, an AI literacy programme launched in partnership with the Ministry of Electronics and IT.
The company’s latest GPT-5 model has shown significant improvements in Indic language support, while the newly launched Study Mode feature—designed to guide users with personalised responses and step-by-step learning—has already gained strong traction among Indian learners.
Going ahead, OpenAI plans to host its first Education Summit in India this month, followed by Developer Day later in the year. The company said it remains committed to making advanced AI more affordable, accessible, and useful for people across the country.
