New certificate, ‘Writing with AI,’ launches Fall 2025

The Department of Writing Studies is launching a new Writing with AI certificate to prepare students for artificial intelligence’s evolving role in the professional landscape.

The certificate will teach students to evaluate the quality and appropriateness of AI writing tools, build proficiency in AI writing principles, impart best practices for responsible AI usage in writing and use AI to communicate effectively.

Students must completely three courses (nine credits total) to earn the certificate:

WRITE 229 (Writing For/With AI) introduces students to the intersection of writing and artificial intelligence, teaching them how to leverage AI tools to enhance accessibility and create content optimized for AI-driven platforms. Students learn not only to use AI as a tool for writing but also to create content that is easily interpreted and utilized by AI. It includes a strong focus on context, ethical decision making and revision.

COID 325 (Applications of AI) introduces students to the application of AI in the workplace. Using a projects format, students develop productivity skills and explore the limitations and opportunities of these emerging technologies. It includes a strong focus on tool evaluation and content production.

WRITE  329 (Style and the Future of Writing) explores the intersection of rhetorical style and new technologies. Students learn how to employ effective rhetorical style using new technologies. Through in-depth analysis, ethical considerations, and practical applications, students develop the skills to craft compelling narratives that resonate deeply with audiences.

Interested students who sign up for WRITE 229 in Fall 2025 will be on track to complete the certificate by the end of Spring 2026.
