Nano Banana: Google DeepMind upgrades Gemini app but concerns of misuse, deepfake persist

Google has launched a new AI image editing tool within the Gemini app. The tool, Nano Banana, was developed by Google DeepMind. With a focus on maintaining likeness in photos, this update ensures consistency in the appearance of people, pets, and objects during edits.

In a blog post, the tech giant stated that many users were dissatisfied with modified photographs that were “close but not quite the same,” particularly those with faces. The update addresses this, whether you’re trying out a classic haircut or dressing up your pet.

The blog post also mentioned that the images created or edited in the Gemini app will include a visible watermark, as well as Google’s invisible SynthID digital watermark, to clearly show they are AI-generated.

The method to use this image editor is simple: upload a photo with a description of what you want changed, and Gemini will modify it while retaining the original look. You may also combine various photos—for example, putting yourself and your dog on a basketball court—or modify the environment of a room to sample fresh wallpaper. Once completed, the image can be sent back into Gemini to produce a film of your creation.

Nano Banana is an AI-powered photo editing tool which is designed to simplify the editing process, making it faster and more accessible for everyone, regardless of their technical skill. While designed for creative and commercial applications, these powerful features can also be exploited to generate deceptive content.

Some people are concerned about the misuse of fake images, misinformation, and deepfakes. Google has added watermarks to help.

Over the weekend, social media platforms were swamped with selfies with everyone from Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan to Tesla CEO Elon Musk. But these pictures were created using this new image editing model.

Taking to X, a user posted 11 examples of ‘Nano Banana’. The caption of the post read, “Google’s mysterious new image model, ‘Nano Banana’, is about to kill Photoshop. It lets you edit anything with just a prompt and get insanely realistic results with striking consistency.”

Another wrote, “You’ve seen these paintings a million times. But never like this. Using Nano-Banana, Seedance, and Kling, I brought them into our modern world, creating an unlikely romance in Central Park, New York.”

You’ve seen these paintings a million times.

But never like this.

Using nano-banana, Seedance, and Kling, I brought them into our modern world, creating an unlikely romance in Central Park, New York City.

In a post on X, a user shared his excitement about ‘Nano-Banana,’ and posted images demonstrating its capabilities. “Nano-Banana is freaking cool. It’s the only model I’ve tried so far that does exactly the editing you ask for without touching anything else, and the image quality is solid too. Come on, Google, release it already,” it wrote.

AI is going bananas ????

With Nano Banana (aka Google’s Gemini 2.5 Flash Image) you can:

1. Make step-by-step edits to the same image without it breaking

2. Restyle photos while keeping faces and objects consistent

3. Merge multiple images together seamlessly

4. Edit details… pic.twitter.com/o4FdO9HHdo

Google’s Nanobanana ???? is about the drop an AI model that delivers pro-level Photoshop edits in seconds, with only text.

This the next generation of what “filters” we’ve been promised forever.

Ever tried to put a product into an AI image and it looks… well, “photoshopped by AI”? Not anymore.

With Nano Banana, you can place products seamlessly into any scene. Perfect lighting, perfect shadows, perfect integration. E-commerce, marketing, art – redefined. pic.twitter.com/8vI0QpuzzX

I took an older image that I generated with Google’s Imagen 3 and altered the scene with nano banana.

From day to night, casting red lighting, new facial expressions, and added wardrobe. I’m still blown away at what we have now. This is only going to get better and better.
