‘It’s almost as if they think they’re creating God or something,’ says Mark Zuckerberg

Arthur Mensch – CEO of Mistral AI
Contrary to most of his counterparts in Silicon Valley, Arthur Mensch, CEO of Mistral AI, has dismissed the notion of a “God-like” artificial general intelligence (AGI) as an unrealistic fantasy.
In an April 2024 interview with The New York Times, Mensch, a self-described atheist, said he’s not buying predictions from Musk and Altman about AI intelligence surpassing that of humans.
“The whole AGI rhetoric is about creating God. I don’t believe in God,” Mensch told the Times. “I’m a strong atheist. So I don’t believe in AGI.”
He added that he sees the drive for AGI, at its core, as “very religious.”
