Meta Platforms (META) has sent its Llama open-source artificial intelligence (AI) model into outer space.

Stay Ahead of the Market:

With the help of Booz Allen Hamilton (BAH), a company that specializes in AI and digital transformation, and chipmaker Nvidia (NVDA), Meta Platforms has launched what it’s calling “Space Llama,” a new AI model that will help astronauts in low Earth orbit aboard the International Space Station.

Specifically, Space Llama will be used by astronauts in the research they conduct aboard the space station. “We see a future where open source AI models like Llama will play a vital role in fueling space exploration and research – enabling astronauts to undertake the next level of experimentation,” said Ahmad Al-Dahle, Meta’s head of generative AI, in a news release.

Final Frontier

Astronauts in space will now have access to Meta’s Llama 3.2 AI model that is powered by Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s (HPE) Spaceborne Computer-2 and Nvidia graphics processing units (GPUs). The companies say that Space Llama is an example of how large language models work in environments that are typically “denied, disrupted, intermittent, and have limited bandwidth.”

The project on the International Space Station aims to lower costs, reduce computing power, and lead to faster outcomes for the astronauts using the technology. Space Llama will also help the astronauts replace paper documents and reduce reliance on instructions from mission control, says Meta.

META stock has declined 20% in the past three months.

Is META Stock a Buy?

The stock of Meta Platforms has a consensus Strong Buy rating among 46 Wall Street analysts. That rating is based on 42 Buy, three Hold, and one Sell recommendations issued in the past three months. The average META price target of $703.61 implies 29.65% upside from current levels.
