LexisNexis has launched its genAI-driven Protégé for PatentSight+, which it’s calling an ‘intuitive AI assistant for the flagship patent analytics platform’, and which is also part of the company’s vast offering. The move comes as the patent world goes all-in on the use of AI and is witnessing the launch of multiple IP startups.
In short, Lexis are taking what they have done with genAI skills elsewhere in their legal data and productivity estate and are adding it to patent search and wider patent research.
This results in ‘Protégé in PatentSight+’ packed with genAI abilities, and thus enables users to ask questions in plain language and ‘receive fast, structured, visual answers drawn from global patent data and scientifically validated metrics’.
For example, you can ask:
‘What are the top M&A targets in the biotech space?
How has the 5G patent landscape been evolving over time?
Who are potential licensing partners for my battery technology?
What opportunities do I have to reduce patent portfolio fees?’
Protégé removes the need for users to manually construct queries, apply filters, or select comparison dimensions, they added. And it delivers visual insights ‘enriched with meaningful explanations’.
The giant legal tech business was keen to underline that generic genAI platforms cannot do this kind of task well enough.
Andrew Matuch, President, LexisNexis Reed Tech & Intellectual Property Solutions, commented: ‘[This] will transform the way our customers interact with patent data. By making it easy to ask questions and get meaningful answers, Protégé helps IP professionals focus on strategy instead of groundwork. It brings the power of PatentSight+ to more users and enables smarter, faster decision-making across the business.’
Is this a big deal?
It’s another example of the data giants tapping their goldmines and injecting some genAI skills to make new and/or improved offerings. For their smaller, startup rivals, this is a challenge, as deploying genAI is where they’ve made real headway on patent work. By Lexis throwing the ‘patent data kitchen sink’ at this, the larger party has some advantages.
That said, some of the more niche IP startups focused on very specific patent workflows may not see this as competition.
Either way, as noted before, the patent world has changed forever because of genAI.
