OpenAI partnered with former Apple designer Jony Ive after acquiring his hardware AI startup, io, earlier this year. While details of their collaboration remain under wraps, reports suggest the duo is working on a new range of hardware-focused devices from the ChatGPT maker.
Shenzhen-listed Luxshare saw its shares jump about 10% on Monday, following a report that the Chinese device assembler had signed a deal with OpenAI to produce a consumer AI device.

OpenAI is reportedly aiming high with its hardware ambitions, planning devices that could become essential desk companions alongside a MacBook Pro and iPhone. According to The Information, one of these products may be a smart speaker, while another could be an AI digital recorder, positioning OpenAI as a major player in consumer AI hardware.

Details about these devices remain scarce, as the earliest launch timeline is late 2026, suggesting production may not have started yet. Reports also mention AI-integrated smart glasses and an AI Pin similar to Humane’s device, though these concepts were previously dismissed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and designer Jony Ive. It’s unclear whether their positions have changed or if the reports are speculative.

Altman had earlier indicated the company was not developing wearables, and Ive has expressed skepticism about AI Pin-like devices. Despite this, rumors suggest OpenAI may be expanding its AI ecosystem hardware, potentially reconsidering past decisions or exploring new concepts alongside its existing AI models.
OpenAI is actively leveraging Apple’s supply chain companies to manufacture these devices. The company has reportedly secured a contract with Luxshare, which assembles iPhones and AirPods, and has approached Goertek, known for HomePods and Apple Watches, to support production of its smart speakers and other AI devices.
The partnership between OpenAI and LoveFrom is also focused on talent acquisition. Reports indicate that several Apple employees have joined OpenAI, attracted by promises from Tang Tan, Chief Hardware Officer, of “less bureaucracy and more collaboration.” This strategic poaching highlights OpenAI’s efforts to combine cutting-edge design with advanced AI integration for its upcoming consumer hardware.
