Dive Brief:
Continuing its small store expansion in the U.S., Ikea announced it would open a 63,000-square-foot store later this year in Dallas, according to a news release.
The two-level store will open at The Shops at Park Lane in the University Park neighborhood of Dallas. It will be the 11th store in the Texas market, including five full-size stores, three plan and order points and two new locations opening in San Marcos and Rockwall.
While the University Park location will offer some 3,200 items in store — including food — for purchase, customers can order any Ikea products online and pick them up for free or have them delivered for a fee, per the release.
Dive Insight:
The small store concept is part of a strategy to bring the brand’s vast furniture offerings to more urban environments where space is limited and difficult to build the company’s massive warehouse-style locations.
“At Ikea, we want to create a better everyday life for the many people and one way we can do that is by bringing Ikea close to where people live, work, socialize and shop. That’s why we’re enhancing our store formats for greater convenience, making delivery more affordable, and ensuring better connectivity with our customers in their daily lives,” Javier Quiñones, CEO and chief sustainability officer of Ikea U.S., said in a statement. “The opening of Ikea Dallas – University Park is a perfect example of our strategy to develop smaller, more accessible urban store formats, bringing a more connected and accessible Ikea experience to everyone.”
The retailer has been investing in new and existing infrastructure over the past few years. Ikea first announced plans in 2023 to invest $2.2 billion to open more locations and strengthen its fulfillment network.
Prior to that, in 2022 Ingka Group, Ikea’s largest franchisor, said it was investing about 3 billion euros in new and existing locations in the U.S., France, Finland, Canada, Germany and Spain.
In February, Ikea said it would open a total of eight locations this spring and summer, with three in California plus four specially formatted stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Oregon and Arizona. Currently, there are 51 Ikea stores in the U.S. and 13 plan and order points with pick-ups, according to an Ikea U.S. spokesperson.
“Our biggest competitive advantage are our Ikea stores,” Ben Sandoval, market manager at Ikea U.S., said in a statement. “This is where everything comes together under one roof and where visitors can experience our brand, our solutions, and our amazing co-workers.”
