IBM, AMD team up on quantum AI supercomputers

In November, IBM and AMD declared plans to pioneer the next generation of computing engineering based on quantum computers matched with high-performance computers, namely quantum-centric supercomputing, and the companies jointly developed scalable, open-source platforms which could redefine the future of computing by capitalizing on IBM that has leadership in creating the highest performance quantum computers and software, and AMD.

Quantum and classical computing are combined by tech sector leaders

Yahoo Finance reported that AI chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices and IBM partnered to create quantum-centric supercomputing, announced on Tuesday. Physical servers in a quantum-based system for supercomputing. Quantum computers are physically paired with large-scale high-performance computing and artificial intelligence (AI) systems, which are usually based on CPUs, GPUs, and other compute engines.

The two companies would form an incredibly potent hybrid model that would shatter the borders of conventional computing, according to the words of IBM CEO Arvind Krishna. Quantum computing will model the real world and make the information look in a whole new way, according to what Krishna said. With the discussion on how quantum computers developed by IBM and the great high-performance computing technologies of AMD can synergize, we will create a hybrid model of powerful work.

Hybrid approach tackles complex real-world problems

This hybrid style of addressing a problem employs various elements of the issue in a form that is addressed using a paradigm best aligned to the solution. As an illustration, quantum computers may simulate the behavior of atoms and molecules in the future, and massive analysis of data could be handled by classical supercomputers that use AI. Collectively, these technologies can help address the problems of reality faster and even more than before.

High-performance computing is where we find the solutions to the most significant challenges in the world said AMX Chair and CEO, Dr. Lisa Su. To the extent that we collaborate with IBM to define the intersection between high-performance computing and quantum technologies, we realize the enormous opportunities to speed up the process of discoveries and innovations.

AMD and IBM are considering how to combine AMD CPUs, GPUs, and FPGAs with IBM quantum computers to effectively execute an emerging class of algorithms that cannot be currently reached by either paradigm, which are considered to operate individually. The suggested initiative can also advance the vision of IBM to provide fault-tolerant quantum computers by the end of the present decade.

Error correction Capabilities were targeted in real time

AMD technologies have the potential to deliver real-time capabilities to perform error corrections, which is a notable part of fault-tolerant quantum computing. The teams have future demonstrations that are scheduled to take place later this year to demonstrate the implementation of the way IBM quantum computers and AMD technologies can collaborate to make hybrid quantum-classical workflows possible.

The stock of IBM is increasing by 1.4% in the early morning on Tuesday and has increased by 10 percent already this year, whereas the stock of AMD is gaining by 1.6% up to now, and this is 37 percent against the year. The companies also intend to investigate how the open-source ecosystem, including Qiskit, might fuel the creation and adoption of novel algorithms exploiting quantum-centric supercomputing.

IBM has already started rigorously laying the groundwork for a future where quantum and classical computers are harmonized, by a recent collusion with RIKEN to deploy as well as physically connect IBM’s modular quantum computer to Fugaku, one of the fastest classical supercomputers in the world.

The IBM-AMD collaboration will be an important advancement towards quantum-based supercomputing that potentially transforms the approach to complex problem solving across industries, but putting quantum-based simulation capabilities and classical AI-based data analytics to solve the problem where conventional computing cannot, and progressing towards quantum-based fault tolerance systems by the end of the decade.
