Grammarly Expands AI Platform with Document-Based Interface and Enhanced Writing Tools

Grammarly has launched a major update to its platform, redefining the role of its AI-driven writing assistant and expanding its capabilities far beyond basic grammar checks. The update, centered around its new Grammarly AI system, introduces a redesigned interface and a suite of powerful AI tools aimed at improving the writing process for students, professionals, and everyday users. Built on the integration of Coda, a productivity startup acquired by Grammarly last year, the new platform features a document-based interface, block-first composition, and rich text blocks, offering a more structured and flexible writing environment [1].

A key component of the update is the introduction of a dedicated AI assistant within a sidebar, which goes beyond grammar correction to offer features such as text summarization, writing suggestions, and targeted feedback based on reader personas. This AI assistant enables users to refine their content in real time, making the writing process more efficient and adaptive to different audiences. Additionally, new tools like the AI Grader, Citation Finder, and Paraphraser provide specialized support for students and researchers, streamlining academic writing and ensuring content originality [1].

Grammarly also introduced AI-powered tools to detect both plagiarism and AI-generated content, addressing growing concerns in academic and professional settings about the authenticity of written work. According to Luke Behnke, VP of enterprise product at Grammarly, the AI detector is not intended as an enforcement tool for teachers but rather as a self-assessment mechanism for students to review their writing before submission. This approach emphasizes education and awareness over punishment, aligning with the company’s broader mission to responsibly integrate AI into the writing process [1].

The company’s commitment to AI-powered productivity is further reflected in its strategic expansion. Grammarly has announced the acquisition of Superhuman, an email client, signaling its intent to extend AI assistance beyond traditional document writing into broader communication channels. This move aligns with a vision of a fully integrated digital assistant ecosystem, where AI supports users across multiple platforms and tasks. The company’s recent financial backing, including a $1 billion investment from General Catalyst in May, reinforces its position as a major player in AI-enhanced productivity tools [1].

From a market perspective, Grammarly’s evolution from a grammar checker to a comprehensive writing platform illustrates the growing role of AI in content creation. The integration of AI into writing tools is not only streamlining workflows but also changing how users approach communication, offering more nuanced control over tone, structure, and audience engagement. This shift highlights a broader trend in AI adoption, where tools are becoming more personalized and intelligent, allowing users to leverage AI without compromising originality or intent.

The launch of these new features underscores Grammarly’s strategic direction and its recognition of the evolving needs of a digital-first generation of writers. As AI continues to transform how content is created and consumed, Grammarly’s latest innovations position it as a leader in shaping the future of digital communication [1].
