Google Gemini Gets a Major Image Editing Upgrade, and It’s Bananas

Google announced a major upgrade to the native image editing features in its Gemini app that’s powered by a new AI model from Google DeepMind. It also implicitly admitted that this new feature is responsible for the stunning “nano-banana” images that had leaked over the previous week.

“Our new image editing model from Google DeepMind is the top-rated image editing model in the world,” Google’s David Sharon and Nicole Brichtova write in the announcement post, citing a third-party ranking system. “People have been going bananas over it already in early previews.”

Google launched native image editing in Gemini in late April, giving users the ability to dramatically alter photos or images of any kind using AI. But this is a major upgrade that preserves a character’s likeness across multiple edits to ensure that people and pets look like themselves as you change their hairstyles, clothes, and other elements.

“Just give Gemini a photo to work with, and tell it what you’d like to change to add your unique touch,” Google says. “Gemini lets you combine photos to put yourself in a picture with your pet, change the background of a room to preview new wallpaper or place yourself anywhere in the world you can imagine, all while keeping you, you. Once you’re done, you can even upload your edited image back into Gemini to turn your new photo into a fun video.”

Here’s one example.

Google recommends trying the following:

Upload a photo of a person or pet and then try different outfits, locations, or even time frames.
Upload multiple photos and blend them together.
Edit images over multiple turns by adding more individual elements or changes one-by-one.
Mix imagery by applying the style of one image to objects in another. For example, take the color and texture of flower petals and apply it to a pair of rainboots.

The quality of the images you can generate and edit with Gemini now is rather impressive. This is definitely worth looking at.

To get started, visit the Gemini app on the web or on mobile and either upload one or more images or prompt it to create a unique new image.
