Some two weeks ago, when Google launched the Pixel 10 series, the demo briefly showed off the upgraded Gboard with some AI smarts. Now, in today’s news, Google is rolling out Gboard with new AI-powered Writing Tools to more phones. Using which, you can proofread or rephrase text right from the keyboard.
Gboard’s new AI-baked Writing Tools feature is here to save your day from typos
Mishaal Rahman at Android Authority spotted the update and reports that it’s powered by Gemini Nano. And it’s Google’s most compact LLM (large language model) designed to run efficiently on phones without relying on cloud processing. Below, check out some screenshots courtesy of the outlet.
Simply put, your data is processed on-device and not sent to Google’s servers. This approach makes it more private and secure in every way you can imagine.
What is interesting is how Gemini Nano has evolved. Back in late 2023, it debuted on the Pixel 8 Pro as a text-only AI. With the Pixel 9 launch, Google upgraded it to a multimodal model, making it capable of understanding not just words but also images and audio.
That shift unlocked broader uses, and now Google is making it available to third-party developers via ML Kit GenAI APIs. In other words, Writing Tools is just one example of what apps could soon do with on-device AI.
As a result, the rollout isn’t limited to just Pixel devices. Per report, OnePlus 13 is getting access to Writing Tools after a quick Gboard update. But Mishaal notes that the update hasn’t hit Galaxy Z Fold 7 yet. Which is usual, as these updates are typically rolled in gradual manner.
Officially, Google lists support only for Pixel 9 and above, across eight languages: English, Chinese, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. But since Gemini Nano already ships on devices with Snapdragon 8 Elite and Dimensity 9400 chips, it’s clear that support will expand.
