Dive Brief:

Depop has launched Outfits, an in-app feature that allows users to style outfits using inventory from its marketplace, the company announced on Wednesday.
Similar to a mood board, the feature allows users to pull items from any listing, place them in a collage and then purchase products. Users can save their looks for later and share them on Instagram or Pinterest.
Users can adjust the size of their selected items, customize their background and find similar items if the one they want is sold out. The company will introduce additional features in the coming months.

Dive Insight:

Years after Etsy purchased Depop for $1.6 billion, the resale platform continues to evolve its shopping experience. The Outfits feature is part of the company’s effort to turn Depop into a daily destination for fashion inspiration.

“From outfit planning and style exploration to creating content for social sharing, Outfits puts the power of self-expression in the hands of our users — no pins, no tabs, just style made simple,” Sonia Biddle, Depop’s interim chief product officer and marketing leader, said in a statement. “Outfits is more than just a tool; it’s a foundational step in Depop’s long-term strategy to create a more socially driven experience. It supports our differentiation in the resale market by leaning into what makes our community unique: creative styling, fashion exploration, and culture-driven commerce.”

Similar to Depop, Pinterest introduced Shuffles in 2022 to allow users to create collages and digital art. Users can cut, overlap and add elements and animations to images from their camera roll or from Pinterest Pins. The social media firm introduced collages to its namesake app in 2023 as well and has continued to evolve that feature.

Prior to debuting its Outfits feature, Depop introduced other tech updates aimed at assisting its sellers. The company introduced generative AI and image recognition technology last year to generate product descriptions with details like color, category, brand and relevant hashtags.

In July, the resale company named Peter Semple as its permanent CEO. He had served as the company’s interim chief executive officer following the departure of its former CEO, Kruti Patel Goyal, who became president and chief growth officer of parent company, Etsy Inc.
