DeepSeek, a Chinese AI company, is reportedly providing direct support to China’s military and intelligence operations, according to a senior US State Department official.
Speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, the official stated that the company’s involvement extends well beyond publicly accessible AI models, suggesting a deeper relationship with government entities in China.
In addition to aiding military efforts, DeepSeek is accused of attempting to circumvent US export restrictions by using Southeast Asian shell companies to obtain high-end semiconductors. These chips are restricted under US regulations designed to limit Beijing’s access to advanced computing hardware that could bolster military capabilities.
The official added that Washington is increasingly convinced DeepSeek’s rapid growth has been significantly powered by access to US technology. This insight fuels broader concerns that Chinese AI firms may be overstating their technological independence while relying heavily on components developed by restricted or foreign entities.
While Chinese law already mandates data sharing with the state upon request, the US claims DeepSeek is proactively cooperating with government agencies.
The US government continues to monitor DeepSeek and similar firms for potential violations and security threats.
