Jack Clark, a former journalist turned AI policy expert, has weighed in on the competitive landscape of artificial intelligence, suggesting that DeepSeek could emerge as a formidable player if it gains access to more computing resources. This statement was made during the Hill and Valley Forum in Washington, where Clark emphasized that despite DeepSeek’s promising algorithmic innovations, it remains “six to eight months behind where US frontier companies are” according to a source.
The Chinese start-up has been generating buzz with its recent technological advancements, yet Anthropic’s internal tests indicate that DeepSeek’s models do not currently pose a national security risk. The company recently open-sourced its 671-billion-parameter Prover-V2, a specialized model for handling mathematical proofs, but has not disclosed further developments on its highly anticipated R2 reasoning model.
DeepSeek first captured attention in January with the release of its open-source R1 model, which is based on the foundational V3 model unveiled in the preceding month. Despite the hype, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei pointed out in a January blog post that DeepSeek’s development costs were higher than commonly perceived, urging the US to consider tightening chip exports to China.
