CMS Germany Rolls Out ClauseBuddy To All Lawyers – Artificial Lawyer

CMS Germany has chosen ClauseBuddy – the drafting solution made by Belgian legal tech company ClauseBase – as its go-to legal drafting tool, and will provide it to all the lawyers in that jurisdiction.

The company, which started in 2019, said that CMS Germany chose them over many other possible options because ‘CMS sought a balanced approach, one that blends more traditional and deterministic technology – e.g. document automation and curated clause libraries, along with advanced AI features’.

‘CMS invested in pooling its knowledge in a curated clause library that immediately gives access to the firm’s know-how. This can in turn be combined with the AI-powered drafting components to provide the best of both worlds,’ they noted.

Pricing was also a factor in the decision, they added.

You can see an AL TV Walk Through of the product here.

Frederik Leenen, Head of Legal Tech at CMS, commented: ‘It covers the best of the old world and also includes the new world of AI and blends them into something that is very neatly done. ClauseBuddy is kind of a Swiss army knife. It has many different tools that all help you do what you expect them to do.’

Is this a big deal? As you know, AL doesn’t do client wins unless they’re indicative of what’s happening in the market. In this case, it shows that although there are many broad platforms out there that handle drafting, review and a range of other skills, some law firms still want a specialised tool, and also perhaps, as noted here, something with a ‘blend’ of old and new AI.

The point about ‘value for money’ is also noteworthy. Given that there are so many competing applications now, it seems inevitable that legal tech pricing will have to change somewhat. After all, it’s a buyers’ market.

And one last point: regional loyalty. AL has noticed several major firms with large European offices, from Dentons, to CMS at other times, as well as ones in Scandinavia, choosing legal tech applications that are ‘Made in Europe‘. Maybe this is because of data reasons, e.g. keeping everything in the EU, or maybe it’s price (as noted), or maybe it’s just that lawyers in Germany, for example, want to buy tools from fellow European organisations? It will be interesting to see if that builds into a stronger pattern.
