OpenAI has made the Sora AI image generator available for free through ChatGPT. Users can now generate images using text prompts without a subscription. The feature is integrated into ChatGPT and works similarly to other AI image tools; just type a prompt, and the tool creates a photorealistic image based on it.
However, video generation through Sora still requires a paid Plus or Pro subscription. OpenAI is keeping that feature behind a paywall, likely due to the higher processing costs and complexity involved. Paid users can generate up to 1080p resolution videos that are up to 20 seconds long.
Users can access the Sora platform directly from ChatGPT and are required to create a username, which is used to share their generated images with others, similar to a social media platform. While users can download the images they generate, there is no option to download images or videos created by others. The platform’s interface is quite similar to the recently launched Meta AI app for Android and iOS.
Downloaded images are saved in PNG format without any visible watermark. However, the metadata will indicate that the image was generated using OpenAI Sora.
When generating an image or video on Sora, users can select different aspect ratios, specify the number of variations, and choose from several pre-defined presets. These include styles such as Film Noir, Balloon World, Pixel Art, Cartoonify, and more, each helping to produce content in a specific visual style.
Users also have access to their own library of AI-generated content, organised into categories like My Media, Favourites, Uploads, and Trash. Additionally, users can group their creations under custom category names.
Sora includes a social feed that displays images and videos created by other users. The interface mimics a social media experience, making it easy to browse content, see what others are generating, and draw creative inspiration.
