Despite the innovation, DeepSeek’s data privacy practices are under scrutiny—marketers must proceed with awareness.

Among the business lessons on entrepreneurship, marketers at start-ups entering a market face a strategic decision to keep pace with competitors. With a new offering, you must be either fast to market or bring something distinct to the marketplace.

These days AI startups face that choice with a shorter runway than most startups, as fierce competition remains among the current leaders – Perplexity, Claude, Google’s Gemini and OpenAI ChatGPT.

Yet the latest AI entrant has found a way to cut through the media buzz on AI. DeepSeek, a Chinese startup, has created a new excitement with its AI model, V3. DeepSeek V3, and its complementary development model, the DeepSeek-reasoner, heralds breakthroughs in displaying AI reasoning and lowering AI development costs.

For CMOs, DeepSeek’s blend of transparent AI reasoning and ultra-low operating costs presents a rare opportunity to scale intelligent marketing tools without breaking the budget.

DeepSeek is an emerging AI platform powered by a mixture-of-experts (MoE) architecture and a built-in reasoning engine. Its efficiency, transparency and low operating costs position it as a potential game-changer for marketers exploring generative AI integration.

Here’s a breakdown of its key components—and why CMOs should pay attention:

What Appears at the DeepSeek Interface

DeepSeek has a similar interface for its online solutions to that of its competitors — Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and ChatGPT. User type their query at the prompt window and view the conversation in the main panel. A left panel for past chats appears, also in the same style as DeepSeek’s competitors.

The most significant experience is that you view the model’s reasoning before it constructs an answer. This is generated by the DeepSeek-reasoner, a reasoning model. Before delivering the final answer, the model first generates a Chain of Thought (CoT) to enhance the accuracy of its responses. Reasoning appears in a slightly grey text just after the prompt window. The reasoning text lets you understand why the model chose its information and lets you decide how to refine a response with further prompts.

Some other differences make DeepSeek stand out:

DeepSeek is a text-based prompt window. It cannot create images from a prompt. Nor does it incorporate other image AI solutions, like DALL-E and its incorporation into ChatGPT. That limits its appeal, overlooking users who need visuals as prompt responses.DeepSeek gives users a choice of using its recommendation engine or incorporating search results in its answers. Buttons in the text window allow you to make a selection. Users can also download the app to access the interface on their smartphone via a QR code.DeepSeek offers a streamlined interface experience. The prominence of DeepSeek’s core features highlights how no specialty features exist when compared to its competitors. It does not have specialized agents like CustomGPT or Gems for users to create their own. I suspect DeepSeek will offer its own sometime soon; neither ChatGPT nor Gemini introduced personalized agents when they first launched.

DeepSeek is changing expectations for GenAI performance by emphasizing transparent reasoning, segmented answers and educational clarity. The comparison below highlights what sets DeepSeek apart—and why that matters for marketing leaders.

Security Cautions About DeepSeek

South Korea removed the DeepSeek app from local app stores, accusing DeepSeek of sharing user data with ByteDance, the owner of TikTok in China. This comes after a US firm Security Scorecard examined DeepSeek’s AI model. It determined that although the DeepSeek model itself is not performing any malicious requests or operating outside of its permissions scope, installations within a third-party Android application held potential exposure of application keys and other sensitive data.

Security concerns have drawn as much media scrutiny as DeepSeek’s astounding online debut. Texas, Virginia, New York and Iowa have prohibited DeepSeek on state devices, a decision that echoes similar state responses to TikTok, where several state governments prohibited the social media app on state devices.

In contrast, adoption among AI developers has been relatively high, since there are ways to host the solution locally. However, reviewing the terms of usage is vital to understanding privacy risks from systematic data usage with DeepSeek. Marketers should also note any further news about DeekSeek as the privacy risks are further scrutinized.

DeepSeek will continue to receive more scrutiny as well as more praise in the days ahead. For those looking at AI, marketers should take advantage of this scrutiny to see how DeepSeek’s formidable capabilities fit within their data workflow.
