California Gov. Newsom on Tuesday announced a new initiative that integrates generative AI technologies across the state government.
The initiative focuses on using generative AI tools that improve traffic flow, road safety and customer service. In a press release, the governor said it’s about improving — not cutting — government services.
“In the Golden State, we know that efficiency means more than cutting services to save a buck, but instead building and refining our state government to better serve all Californians,” Newsom said.
As part of the new initiative, the California Department of Transportation will use use generative AI to analyze highway data and reduce congestion, while the Department of Tax and Fee Administration will use AI tools to streamline its customer service systems. The state will also deploy AI analytics aimed at preventing traffic fatalities and improving public safety.
“We are committed to harnessing the latest technologies to better serve Californians,” Nick Maduros, California Government Operations Agency secretary, said in the press release. “With GenAI, we’re improving government service while also showing the benefits this California-based industry can bring to governments all over the world.”
The rollout stems from Newsom’s 2023 executive order on AI. It uses California’s unique “request for innovative ideas” procurement process, which allows the state says allows it to test and scale tech projects more quickly and securely.
The initiative also aligns with the February launch of the new Engaged California platform designed to strengthen civic engagement, especially in wildfire-affected communities.
