Kunal Nayyar, known for acting in ‘The Big Bang Theory’, has co-founded a new business which is described as ‘an app designed for families and legal professionals’ that ‘streamlines the storage and organisation of legal documents such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney documentation’. It is branded as IQ121.
So, beyond the Hollywood glitter, what is actually there? Well, the new company spells out all the types of documents the app can store, listing everything from insurance docs to health records, to contracts.
But…er….there are already a lot of applications out there where you can store stuff. Plus, the connection to the legal world is a bit tenuous. I.e. you can store records in there that have a legal dimension – but you could also store photos of your favourite cacti, a copy of your grandmother’s lasagne recipe, and anything else.
However, the startup adds they have ‘military grade encryption’ to protect those documents, and that is ‘AES-256 encryption’.
The company says that: ‘The idea for IQ121 was generated by Kunal during the COVID-19 pandemic. While organizing his parents’ trip from India to the U.S., struggling to gather flight numbers, passport details and hotel confirmations, the frustration led him to question: “Why isn’t there an easier way to share this information?”’
One thing that is perhaps useful is that storage plans will automatically ‘pass down through trusted successors, ensuring a family’s legacy lives on’, which could be useful for wills and probate needs. And, you can also make videos and store them, ensuring family messages are stored forever.
Is this a big deal? One can see consumers using it if they don’t just want to use Dropbox or other document stores. But, can’t really see this flying as a ‘legal tech’ tool. But, AL could be wrong.
