I was honored to be a member of the Steering Committee under the impressive leadership of Summit Envoy Anne Bouverot. With regular working group consultations and open calls for ideas, a broad range of advice was solicited on five summit themes: public interest, future of work, trust and security, global governance, and innovation. By widening the aperture, the Summit catalyzed a weeklong series of side events in Paris and beyond, encompassing thousands of people and hundreds of organizations from across the globe. Members of the PAI team shared our work in a variety of venues ranging from frontier and foundation…
YouTube’s giving Shorts creators more capacity to enhance their creations with gen AI, with the incorporation of new generative AI features into the Shorts composer flow. And not only new features, but a whole new AI model, which will produce better-looking AI video content to enhance your creativity. As explained by YouTube: “Last year, we shared updates to Dream Screen, our feature that lets you generate unique AI backgrounds for your Shorts with just a text prompt. Today, Dream Screen is getting another major upgrade with the integration of Google DeepMind’s newest video generation model, Veo 2, making it more powerful…
Silicon Valley isn’t just coding anymore. It’s also “vibe coding.”Using AI to write code has been gaining traction for years, but now a new buzzword coined by Andrej Karpathy, a computer scientist who cofounded OpenAI, is capturing the movement. This month, he described what he sees as a new kind of coding in which “you fully give in to the vibes” and “forget the code even exists.”It’s an approach that defies conventional wisdom in the tech industry, that developing software demands virtuosic skill from engineers.”It’s not really coding — I just see stuff, say stuff, run stuff, and copy-paste stuff, and…
Valentine’s Day is upon us, marking the celebration of love and relationships, many of which are now found online. With 30% of U.S. adults reporting using dating sites and apps, hopeful romantics continue their search for their “one true love” en masse. But will they get a match made in heaven? Or will statistical models and algorithms keep them yearning for more? Online dating has changed how people all over the world connect and find partners. Now, advancements in AI are revolutionizing how people meet, communicate, and form connections. While AI can be used to help people find “the one,”…
On February 11th, 2025 AI Now Co-Executive Director Sarah Myers West delivered the plenary keynote at the Forum on AI and Sustainability at the AI Action Summit in Paris. Generate Video consists of two features: Text-to-Video and Image-to-Video. As those names imply, Text-to-Video allows users to generate footage using text description, while Image-to-Video lets you add a reference image alongside the prompt to provide a starting point for the video. Generate Video includes various options that refine or guide the results, such as simulating styles, camera angles, motion, and shooting distances.Video is now output in 1080p at 24 frames per second, up from the original 720p quality. Both Text-to-Video and Image-to-Video take 90 seconds or longer to generate clips at a maximum length of five seconds — shorter than…
DENVER — In Zach Kennelly’s senior civics class, students are building custom chatbots with artificial intelligence. One student is working on a chatbot that better curates movie and television show recommendations based on a viewer’s recent watch history. Another is creating a chatbot that — somewhat ironically — helps members of Gen Z like herself practice their communication skills, such as by coming up with conversation starters. Other students, according to Kennelly’s co-teacher Gianna Geraffo, are brainstorming chatbots that could support mental health, improve financial literacy and provide resources to immigrants. Soon, students will refine their ideas, and eventually, the…
As the 2025 AI Action Summit kicks off in Paris, global leaders, industry experts, and academics are converging to address the challenges and opportunities presented by AI. Against the backdrop of rapid technological advancements and growing societal concerns, the summit aims to build on the progress made since the 2024 Seoul Safety Summit and establish a cohesive global framework for AI governance. AI Action Summit is ‘a wake-up call’ French President Emmanuel Macron has described the summit as “a wake-up call for Europe,” emphasising the need for collective action in the face of AI’s transformative potential. This comes as the…
In late August 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released the final version of its Herbicide Strategy. The strategy is intended to bring the agency into compliance with its obligations under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) to protect more than 900 federally endangered and threatened species from herbicides’ potential impacts. As a result, farmers can expect to see changes in drift and runoff mitigation measures required on labels, as products are registered and reregistered moving forward. This requires a shift in how pesticides are to be managed, down to the field level. What Changed From the Draft? The EPA…
Pesticides are powerful tools on the farm, but they are not without risk. Understanding the essentials of pesticide safety can help prevent unintended exposure for people and the environment. February is National Pesticide Safety Education Month, and this is a great time to review pesticide safety practices on the farm. “Today, pesticides are used in and around homes, apartments, workplaces, farms, and a myriad of other settings to control weeds, insects, disease-causing organisms, rodents, and other pests,” said Fred Whitford, PhD, director of Purdue Pesticide Programs at Purdue University. “That means everyone benefits when we focus on pesticide safety education.”…
