In today’s increasingly digital world, businesses and individuals depend heavily on data for decision-making, operations and innovation, making data resilience critical. As a result, backup, recovery and cyber resilience should all come together under the same umbrella of data resilience, according to Anand Eswaran (pictured), chief executive officer of Veeam Software Group GmbH. Veeam’s Anand Eswaran talks with theCUBE about why data resilience plays a critical role in cybersecurity. “I’d say data is the currency of every modern business today, actually not just business [but] of every city [and] of every government, regardless of size,” he said. “If data stops,…

Image: kckate16/Envato Elements Questions have swirled as to whether the U.S. government relied on generative AI to establish the tariffs that are expected to take effect April 5. When asked to calculate global tariffs, AI models including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, xAI’s Grok, and Anthropic’s Claude all produced the same formula reportedly used by President Donald Trump in his newly unveiled trade reforms. Critics argue that tasking a generative AI with formulating a policy decision of global significance sets an alarming precedent — one that underscores both the superficiality of its calculations and the magnitude of its consequences. Increased U.S.…

New reports out today from Crunchbase Inc. and PitchBook-NVCA Venture Monitor reveal that global venture capital rebounded sharply in the first quarter of 2025, posting its strongest performance since mid-2022. However, both datasets point to a growing division in the startup ecosystem where a small set of companies and sectors, particularly artificial intelligence, are capturing an outsized share of investment. According to Crunchbase, total global startup funding reached $113 billion in the first quarter, up 17% from the previous quarter and an impressive 54% year-over-year. Though the headline figure is positive, the number was slanted by one single deal: OpenAI’s…

Alphabet spinoff SandboxAQ — an AI and quantum computing startup — added another $150 million to its Series E from the likes of Google and Nvidia. The add-on comes less than four months after the company announced it had raised a $300 million round at a $5.6 billion valuation. Other investors in the Series E add-on include Ray Dalio, Horizon Kinetics and BNP Paribas. SandboxAQ is looking at the related effects of both AI and quantum — which is where the company gets the “AQ” in its name — to develop commercial products for telecom, financial services, healthcare, security and…

A new study appears to lend credence to allegations that OpenAI trained at least some of its AI models on copyrighted content. OpenAI is embroiled in suits brought by authors, programmers, and other rights-holders who accuse the company of using their works — books, codebases, and so on — to develop its models without permission. OpenAI has long claimed a fair use defense, but the plaintiffs in these cases argue that there isn’t a carve-out in U.S. copyright law for training data. The study, which was co-authored by researchers at the University of Washington, the University of Copenhagen, and Stanford,…
