Engineers at MIT have developed a new approach to crude oil fractionating that could slash the amount of energy needed for processing the crude into different fuels by as much as 90% in a breakthrough that could revolutionize fuel production.MIT engineers have developed a membrane that can filter the components of crude oil based on their molecular size, eliminating the need for crude oil distillation, which is highly energy-intensive.According to MIT, separating crude oil into products such as gasoline, diesel, and heating oil accounts for about 6% of the global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Most of that energy goes into…
Protein Industries Canada has announced a new funding allocation of $15 million from the Government of Canada to support genomics and artificial intelligence (AI) programs targeting the country’s agrifood industry. The funding is distributed across two streams, aiming to enhance crop breeding capabilities and introduce AI-driven efficiencies throughout the food production value chain. “This new investment will deliver value across the entire supply chain” The Genomics Stream will receive $7 million over five years to support the development and commercialization of improved broad-acre crop varieties, with particular focus on pulse and cereal crops. Projects under this stream will utilize genomic…
American streets are incredibly dangerous for pedestrians. A San Carlos, California-based startup called Obvio thinks it can change that by installing cameras at stop signs — a solution the founders also say won’t create a panopticon. That’s a bold claim at a time when other companies like Flock have been criticized for how its license plate-reading cameras have become a crucial tool in an overreaching surveillance state. Obvio founders Ali Rehan and Dhruv Maheshwari believe they can build a big enough business without indulging those worst impulses. They’ve designed the product with surveillance and data-sharing limitations to ensure they can…

George Clooney’s Good Night, and Good Luck became the first play to gross $4 million in a single week, but for most A-list stars the Great White Way isn’t paved with gold. George Clooney could not have asked for a much bigger or better Broadway debut. Good Night, and Good Luck—the show he cowrote, produced and stars in—is nominated for five Tony Awards at this Sunday’s ceremony, including Clooney for Best Actor, and has broken weekly box office records as the highest-grossing non-musical play in history. Its penultimate performance on Saturday will be broadcast live on CNN and HBO Max,…
With its plan for a “European AI continent”, the EU Commission wants to catch up with other AI locations around the world: In terms of cloud infrastructure, Europe is currently equipped with three times fewer data centers than the USA, according to Commission circles. Corresponding capacities should therefore be created throughout Europe. The Commission wants to boost the development of AI in the EU with up to 200 billion euros. Of this, 20 billion euros are to be made available for up to five new “AI Gigafactories”. However, it is unclear how much of this will actually be provided from…

Cisco has announced Foundation AI, an open-source reasoning model for use in IT security. It can be integrated into your security applications and uses eight billion parameters to answer queries quickly and practically. According to Chief Product Officer Jeetu Patel, Cisco trained the model with 200 billion tokens based on Llama 3 with the aim of creating a compact and high-performance model that is suitable for smaller environments and can be run on an Nvidia A100. The company did not specify a release date. Cisco is also expanding its AI Defense monitoring software to include risk management for the supply…
When Meta released its large language model Llama 3 for free this April, it took outside developers just a couple days to create a version without the safety restrictions that prevent it from spouting hateful jokes, offering instructions for cooking meth, or misbehaving in other ways.A new training technique developed by researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, UC San Diego, Lapis Labs, and the nonprofit Center for AI Safety could make it harder to remove such safeguards from Llama and other open source AI models in the future. Some experts believe that, as AI becomes ever more powerful, tamperproofing…
