Researchers from Stanford University early today published the latest edition of their annual AI Index Report, detailing the growing influence of artificial intelligence technologies on our society and the global economy. The Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, known as Stanford HAI, has been publishing its annual reports on the state of the AI industry since 2017. This year’s edition, the eighth, is the “most comprehensive” report to date, spanning more than 430 pages. The authors say it’s arriving at a critical juncture as the influence of AI across society rapidly accelerates with the emergence of increasingly capable and sophisticated…

Stay up to date with everything that is happening in the wonderful world of AM via our LinkedIn community.A research team from MIT’s Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) has developed a new software tool that makes it easier to design and make cable-driven 3D printed objects. The tool, called Xstrings, can be used to produce a variety of products with embedded actuation, from robotic hands with gripping capabilities to interactive sculptures with animal-like movement.Cable-driven mechanisms are frequently used by engineers to create components that can move fluidly like a human or animal. This movement is generated by pulling…
PLAID is a multimodal generative model that simultaneously generates protein 1D sequence and 3D structure, by learning the latent space of protein folding models. The awarding of the 2024 Nobel Prize to AlphaFold2 marks an important moment of recognition for the of AI role in biology. What comes next after protein folding? In PLAID, we develop a method that learns to sample from the latent space of protein folding models to generate new proteins. It can accept compositional function and organism prompts, and can be trained on sequence databases, which are 2-4 orders of magnitude larger than structure databases. Unlike…
IBM is releasing the latest version of its mainframe hardware that includes new updates meant to accelerate AI adoption. The hardware and consulting company on Monday announced IBM z17, the latest version of its mainframe computer hardware. This fully encrypted mainframe is powered by an IBM Telum II processor and is designed for more than 250 AI use cases, the company says, including AI agents and generative AI. Mainframes might seem like old hat, but they’re used by 71% of Fortune 500 companies today, according to one source. In 2024, the mainframe market was worth an estimated $5.3 billion, per…
GE Vernova is celebrating its first birthday this week with a $50 million commitment to its neighbor, MIT.Before the energy spinoff from General Electric emerged as a separate public company one year ago, chief executive Scott Strazik had to pick a headquarters location. Strazik settled on Cambridge — not because its former parent had been based in Boston, but because of all the brainpower that originally attracted GE here in 2016.The company’s new partnership with MIT is a perfect example of why Strazik picked Cambridge. GE Vernova announced on Monday, two days before the spinoff’s anniversary, that it’s committing $50…
Tech companies are adamant that the regulation of artificial intelligence in the E.U. is preventing its citizens from accessing the latest and greatest products. However, a number of civil society groups feel otherwise, maintaining that AI developers need to produce products that uphold their customers’ safety and privacy. Some of tech giants’ delayed launches in EU There have been a number of instances where the launches of AI products in the E.U. have either been delayed or cancelled as a result of regulations. For instance, this week, Meta’s Llama 4 series of AI models was released everywhere except Europe. Its…

While OpenAI’s massive $40 billion funding boosted global and North America’s funding totals, Asia was not so lucky. Instead, the region saw its lowest funding quarter since 2014, with only $13 billion going to VC-backed startups, per Crunchbase data. That number represents a whopping 40% drop from Q1 last year and a 25% decrease from Q4 2024. It’s also another sign of the area’s lagging venture market — which has seen declines in four of the last five quarters. All told, the total dollar figure for investment is the lowest since Asia saw only $12.3 billion go to its startups…
