Protein Industries Canada has announced a new funding allocation of $15 million from the Government of Canada to support genomics and artificial intelligence (AI) programs targeting the country’s agrifood industry. The funding is distributed across two streams, aiming to enhance crop breeding capabilities and introduce AI-driven efficiencies throughout the food production value chain. “This new investment will deliver value across the entire supply chain” The Genomics Stream will receive $7 million over five years to support the development and commercialization of improved broad-acre crop varieties, with particular focus on pulse and cereal crops. Projects under this stream will utilize genomic…

Last week, Chinese lab DeepSeek released an updated version of its R1 reasoning AI model that performs well on a number of math and coding benchmarks. The company didn’t reveal the source of the data it used to train the model, but some AI researchers speculate that at least a portion came from Google’s Gemini family of AI. Sam Paeach, a Melbourne-based developer who creates “emotional intelligence” evaluations for AI, published what he claims is evidence that DeepSeek’s latest model was trained on outputs from Gemini. DeepSeek’s model, called R1-0528, prefers words and expressions similar to those Google’s Gemini 2.5…
AI hallucinations are becoming more dangerous as models are increasingly trusted to surface information and make critical decisions. We’ve all got that know-it-all friend that can’t admit when they don’t know something, or resorts to giving dodgy advice based on something they’ve read online. Hallucinations by AI models are like that friend, but this one could be in charge of creating your cancer treatment plan. That’s where Themis AI enters the picture. This MIT spinout has managed to achieve something that seems straightforward in theory but is actually quite complex, teaching AI systems to say, “I’m not sure about this.”AI systems typically…

There’s a video on TikTok that has, as of early June, been liked nearly 1 million times. In it, a man in a suit and tie smiles and raises his eyebrows in excitement at the camera. A caption over the video sets the viewer up: He’s landed an interview for his dream job, and then “this happens.”The video cuts to a virtual interview starting on his laptop. “Hello,” he says. “Hi,” a stilted female voice says. “Thank you so much for joining the interview today.” The man’s brows furrow. He’s talking to a robot.“For our first question, let’s circle back.…
With its plan for a “European AI continent”, the EU Commission wants to catch up with other AI locations around the world: In terms of cloud infrastructure, Europe is currently equipped with three times fewer data centers than the USA, according to Commission circles. Corresponding capacities should therefore be created throughout Europe. The Commission wants to boost the development of AI in the EU with up to 200 billion euros. Of this, 20 billion euros are to be made available for up to five new “AI Gigafactories”. However, it is unclear how much of this will actually be provided from…

ARTIFICIAL intelligence (AI) – and more recently, generative AI – is changing the way businesses grow, engage customers, and operate. In the retail sector alone, AI is projected to generate between S$400 billion and S$660 billion in annual value globally, transforming everything from product discovery to customer service.Singapore has laid a strong foundation to lead in this AI-driven future. With strong digital infrastructure, a forward-thinking Smart Nation strategy, and robust policy support, the groundwork for AI adoption is already in place. Core sectors such as logistics and retail – both critical to e-commerce – are beginning to see the benefits…
