As performance gaps narrow and model costs drop, the open vs. closed model debate is in the spotlight. This brief explores enterprise adoption in the landscape and the cost dynamics reshaping the divide. This is part 2 in our series on the generative AI divide. In part 1, we cover the open-source vs. closed-source foundation model landscape.  Open-source AI is drawing unprecedented attention from developers and enterprises, driven in part by DeepSeek’s recent model releases. Cost pressures and demands to improve the performance of generative AI applications are driving enterprise interest in the ecosystem as organizations seek more flexible and…

This is a monthly feature that runs down the month’s top 10 funding rounds in the U.S. Check out February’s biggest rounds here. March was a pretty good month for big rounds. To even make the list, a company needed to raise $200 million. Not surprisingly, a big artificial intelligence raise led the way. 1. Anthropic, $3.5B, artificial intelligence: Anthropic, a ChatGPT rival with its AI assistant Claude, raised a $3.5 billion funding round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, valuing it at $61.5 billion. The San Francisco-based startup was most recently valued at $18.5 billion in February 2024. The new…

Hailed by various market research reports as the big tech trend in 2025 — especially in the enterprise — it seems we can’t go more than 12 hours or so without the debut of another way to make, orchestrate (link together), or otherwise optimize purpose-built AI tools and workflows designed to handle routine white collar work. Yet Emergence AI, a startup founded by former IBM Research veterans and which late last year debuted its…

OpenAI has been accused by many parties of training its AI on copyrighted content sans permission. Now a new paper by an AI watchdog organization makes the serious accusation that the company increasingly relied on nonpublic books it didn’t license to train more sophisticated AI models. AI models are essentially complex prediction engines. Trained on a lot of data — books, movies, TV shows, and so on — they learn patterns and novel ways to extrapolate from a simple prompt. When a model “writes” an essay on a Greek tragedy or “draws” Ghibli-style images, it’s simply pulling from its vast…

Paper: Abstract: While recent preference alignment algorithms for language models have demonstrated promising results, supervised fine-tuning (SFT) remains imperative for achieving successful convergence. In this paper, we study the crucial role of SFT within the context of preference alignment, emphasizing that a minor penalty for the disfavored generation style is sufficient for preference-aligned SFT. Building on this foundation, we introduce a straightforward and innovative reference model-free monolithic odds ratio preference optimization algorithm, ORPO, eliminating the necessity for an additional preference alignment phase. We demonstrate, both empirically and theoretically, that the odds ratio is a sensible choice for contrasting favored and…
