Hong Kong-based activist fund Oasis Management has criticized Japanese chemical company DIC Corporation for choosing to relocate the Kawamura Memorial DIC Museum of Art to the International House of Japan (IHJ), a private members’ club in Tokyo. The move includes an extensive collection of valuable artworks, including seven of Mark Rothko’s “Seagram Murals.”Oasis, a major shareholder in severely indebted, loss-making DIC Corp – which owns the now-closed museum – said IHJ has “close ties” to DIC Corp’s chairman, Yoshihisa Kawamura. In a public statement released last month, Oasis called the move “highly inappropriate” and accused DIC Corp of attempting to “deprive shareholders of…
Students on campus at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts.Education Images | Universal Images Group | Getty ImagesA group of universities — including Brown University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology — and education groups filed a lawsuit on Tuesday seeking to halt the Department of Energy’s cuts to federal research grants.Last week, the Energy Department (DOE) announced a new policy to reduce the funding of “indirect costs” of research grants to 15%.However, the plaintiffs argue such cuts will “devastate scientific research at America’s universities” and “undermine” the nation’s status as a global leader in innovation. “The pace of scientific discoveries…
NVIDIA has announced a foundation AI model for humanoid robots called NVIDIA Isaac GR00T N1, aka GR00T N1. The chip maker announced that this pre-trained AI model is available as open-source. The announcement came at the company’s annual GTC conference, which took place in San Jose, California, on March 18. NVIDIA has announced the GR00T N1, a foundation AI model for humanoid robots NVIDIA reportedly trained the GR00T N1 AI model on existing datasets and synthetically generated data. For those unaware, synthetic data is artificially created using computational methods and simulations and mimics the statistical properties of real-world data. The…
A new paper co-authored by the former CEO of Google has outlined a future where AI training data centers could be blown up by foreign nations.Eric Schmidt, along with Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang and the Center for AI Safety’s Dan Hendrycks, warned that “destabilizing AI developments could rupture the balance of power and raise the odds of great-power conflict.”The paper lays out the concept of Mutual Assured AI Malfunction (MAIM), modeled on nuclear mutual assured destruction (MAD), where any “aggressive bid for unilateral AI dominance is met with preventive sabotage by rivals.”This could involve espionage, cyberattacks, or kinetic strikes…
In the world of artificial intelligence, much of the spotlight has been focused on the training of massive models like GPT-4, Gemini, and others. These models require vast computational resources and months of training on specialized hardware. Yet, for all the attention paid to training, the most pressing challenge in AI today lies elsewhere: inference. Inference—the process of using a trained model to generate predictions or outputs—is where the rubber meets the road. Inference is an operational cost that scales linearly with every request and when it comes to deploying AI at the edge the challenge of inference becomes more…

Nvidia Corporation’s NVDA stock has dropped 17.34% year-to-date, but the company has now reportedly seen a reversal of planned export restrictions on its H20 artificial intelligence chips. What Happened: The Donald Trump administration had been considering a ban on the export of Nvidia’s H20 AI chips to China, which would have been the most advanced AI processors legally available to Chinese companies. These restrictions had been in the works for months and were expected to be implemented soon. However, after Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang met with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate last week, the administration has reversed course, reported NPR,…
Graphical User Interface (GUI) agents offer cross-platform solutions for automating complex digital tasks, with significant potential to transform productivity workflows. However, their performance is often constrained by the scarcity of high-quality trajectory data. To address this limitation, we propose training Vision Language Models (VLMs) on data-rich, reasoning-intensive tasks during a dedicated mid-training stage, and then examine how incorporating these tasks facilitates generalization to GUI planning scenarios. Specifically, we explore a range of tasks with readily available instruction-tuning data, including GUI perception, multimodal reasoning, and textual reasoning. Through extensive experiments across 11 mid-training tasks, we demonstrate that: (1) Task generalization proves…
Robert Legato – the respected VFX innovator who won Oscars for “Titanic,” “Hugo” and “The Jungle Book” – has joined Stability AI at chief pipeline architect. In doing so, he reteams with James Cameron, an influential board member for the AI firm. Legato is credited with creating the virtual cinematography pipeline for Cameron’s “Avatar,” which went on to surpass the director’s “Titanic” as the highest grossing film of all time with $2.8 billion at the worldwide box office. Legato’s pioneering work has also included “Apollo 13,” “The Aviator,” and the virtual production of “The Lion King.” He’s also held roles…
