OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman. Image: Creative Commons OpenAI has rolled out two new AI models, o3 and o4‑mini, that can literally “think with images,” marking a big step forward in how machines understand pictures. These models, announced in an OpenAI press release, can reason about images the same way they do about text — cropping, zooming, and rotating photos as part of their internal thought process. At the heart of this update is the ability to blend visual and verbal reasoning. “OpenAI o3 and o4‑mini represent a significant breakthrough in visual perception by reasoning with images in their chain of…
AsianFin — The global venture capital (VC) transaction volumes plunged in the first quarter of 2025, according to global research institutions Crunchbase and PitchBook-NVCA.Despite a decline in overall deal volume, artificial intelligence (AI) investments have experienced the most robust quarter in the first quarter of 2025 since mid-2022.Global VC transactions in Q1 2025 reached 7,551 deals, a 32% year-over-year decline, as per PitchBook. 90 Second Summary by Michael Redmond, 9-dan professional, and Chris Garlock on today’s spectacular fourth match between DeepMind’s program AlphaGo take on the legendary Lee Sedol (9-dan pro), the top Go player of the past decade, in a $1M 5-game challenge match in Seoul. In October 2015, AlphaGo became the first computer program ever to beat a professional Go player by winning 5-0 against the reigning 3-times European Champion Fan Hui (2-dan pro). That work was featured in a front cover article in the science journal Nature in January 2016. source
Say hello to OpenAI o1—a new series of AI models designed to spend more time thinking before they respond. This new series of AI models can reason through complex tasks and solve harder problems than previous models in science, coding, and math. More here: www.openai.com/o1 source
Determining how best to incorporate AI in your reporting can be daunting. For journalists and small newsrooms navigating tight deadlines and limited resources, harnessing AI tools to carry out time consuming tasks can be pivotal. For students developing a foundational skill set for future reporting careers, the technology can’t be ignored. Think of AI tools similarly to how you do common applications like Microsoft Excel or Adobe Photoshop: AI can help free up time, which you can in turn dedicate to more in-depth reporting, and more creative writing, visuals and marketing, among other perks. However, a 2024 survey by the…

Large Video Models (LVMs) built upon Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown promise in video understanding but often suffer from misalignment with human intuition and video hallucination issues. To address these challenges, we introduce VistaDPO, a novel framework for Video Hierarchical Spatial-Temporal Direct Preference Optimization. VistaDPO enhances text-video preference alignment across three hierarchical levels: i) Instance Level, aligning overall video content with responses; ii) Temporal Level, aligning video temporal semantics with event descriptions; and iii) Perceptive Level, aligning spatial objects with language tokens. Given the lack of datasets for fine-grained video-language preference alignment, we construct VistaDPO-7k, a dataset of 7.2K…
