Leveraging visual priors from pre-trained text-to-image (T2I) generative models has shown success in dense prediction. However, dense prediction is inherently an image-to-image task, suggesting that image editing models, rather than T2I generative models, may be a more suitable foundation for fine-tuning. Motivated by this, we conduct a systematic analysis of the fine-tuning behaviors of both editors and generators for dense geometry estimation. Our findings show that editing models possess inherent structural priors, which enable them to converge more stably by “refining” their innate features, and ultimately achieve higher performance than their generative counterparts. Based on these findings, we introduce \textbf{FE2E},…

Things had a way of just happening in the small, tight-knit New York art world of the 1960s and ’70s. Artists introduced other artists to dealers, who in turn introduced them to more artists. Tony Shafrazi arrived in New York in the late sixties, a transplant from Iran by way of London. Within 24 hours, he had met Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Through Richard Serra, he was introduced to Zadik Zadikian, a sculptor from Yerevan, Soviet Armenia, obsessed with plaster and gold leaf. Zadikian became the first artist Shafrazi ever exhibited.“I didn’t even know he was Armenian then,” Zadikian…

In a sign of the times (and where things are going), visiting google.com/ai now opens Google Search AI Mode. Previously, google.com/aimode was the shortcut to the latest Google Search experience on desktop and mobile web. It has now been shortened for a slightly more memorable, if not obvious, URL. This joins the desktop Chrome New Tab Page shortcut inside the “Search Google or type a URL” field, and in the Omnibox depending on your query. (The former, introduced in July, has become my go-to way to access AI Mode. Personally, the shortcut I use the least is the filter in…

ChatGPT-5, “Draw Sam Altman with three arms, sweeping the word scaling under a rug”A brief update:Some battles no longer need fighting. The notion on which this Substack was founded in May 2022 — that LLM scaling would not bring us to AGI — has gone mainstream. Even Palantir’s CEO Alex Karp, has apparently gone full Gary Marcus:Perhaps I also no longer need to warn people that the idea that coding would disappear soon is bullshit. Anyone remember this prediction from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei back in March? Some journalists I could name seem to take it seriously at the time. (I…
