Optimization methods are the engines underlying neural networks that enable them to learn from data. In this lecture, DeepMind Research Scientist James Martens covers the fundamentals of gradient-based optimization methods, and their application to training neural networks. Major topics include gradient descent, momentum methods, 2nd-order methods, and stochastic methods. James analyzes these methods through the interpretive framework of local 2nd-order approximations. AI models like Anthropic Claude are increasingly asked not just for factual recall, but for guidance involving complex human values. Whether it’s parenting advice, workplace conflict resolution, or help drafting an apology, the AI’s response inherently reflects a set of underlying principles. But how can we truly understand which values an AI expresses when interacting with millions of users? In a research paper, the Societal Impacts team at Anthropic details a privacy-preserving methodology designed to observe and categorise the values Claude exhibits “in the wild.” This offers a glimpse into how AI alignment efforts translate into real-world behaviour. The core…
China’s tech companies will drive adoption of the MCP (Model Context Protocol) standard that transforms AI assistants from simple chatbots into powerful digital helpers. MCP works like a universal connector that lets AI assistants interact directly with favourite apps and services – enabling them to make payments, book appointments, check maps, and access information on different platforms on users’ behalves. As reported by the South China Morning Post, companies like Ant Group, Alibaba Cloud, and Baidu are deploying MCP-based services and positioning AI agents as the next step, after chatbots and large language models. But will China’s MCP adoption truly…
AUSTIN, Texas – Technology and telematics company Motive announced at its Vision 25 user conference a host of new features expanding on its AI-powered, integrated operations platform. Some of the features include AI safety models to reduce collisions, an AI Assistant for time-sensitive issues and fraud detection including a $250,000 fraud protection guarantee. This is part of a yearslong effort of AI research and development dating back to 2021, when early AI computer vision models were able to recognize instances of following too closely and cell phone usage. Fast forward to 2025 and the data collected over the years now allows…
Subdivisions.com Subdivisions.com Sets New Standards in AI-Driven Real Estate Miami, FL, April 22, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Subdivisions.com, a leader in AI-enhanced real estate intelligence, has announced a significant expansion of its mission. Following its successful launch as South Florida’s premier subdivision search platform, the company is now evolving into the essential intelligence layer that will power its AI real estate copilot, redefining how homebuyers and investors discover properties. Since its debut in late 2023, Subdivisions.com has curated and structured thousands of South Florida’s residential subdivisions. This effort delivers hyperlocal insights into pricing trends, inventory dynamics, community lifestyles, and comparable…
Researchers from the Center for AI Safety (CAIS), MIT’s Media Lab, the Brazilian university UFABC, and the pandemic prevention non-profit SecureBio have found that leading artificial intelligence models can outperform experienced, PhD-level virologists in troubleshooting complex laboratory procedures. The findings, detailed in a new study introducing the Virology Capabilities Test (VCT), demonstrate AI’s proficiency in specialized scientific tasks but also highlight serious dual-use concerns, suggesting these tools could lower the barrier for creating dangerous biological agents. The VCT benchmark, consisting of 322 questions and detailed further in its research paper, was designed specifically to measure an AI’s ability to assist…
Using the 2 Stage Free Cash Flow to Equity, C3.ai fair value estimate is US$21.92 With US$19.21 share price, C3.ai appears to be trading close to its estimated fair value Analyst price target for AI is US$29.47, which is 34% above our fair value estimate Today we will run through one way of estimating the intrinsic value of C3.ai, Inc. (NYSE:AI) by taking the expected future cash flows and discounting them to today’s value. The Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) model is the tool we will apply to do this. Before you think you won’t be able to understand it, just…
We propose MR. Video, an agentic long video understanding framework that demonstrates the simple yet effective MapReduce principle for processing long videos: (1) Map: independently and densely perceiving short video clips, and (2) Reduce: jointly aggregating information from all clips. Compared with sequence-to-sequence vision-language models (VLMs), MR. Video performs detailed short video perception without being limited by context length. Compared with existing video agents that typically rely on sequential key segment selection, the Map operation enables simpler and more scalable sequence parallel perception of short video segments. Its Reduce step allows for more comprehensive context aggregation and reasoning, surpassing explicit…
Emerging technology, when first being presented to the public-at-large, is bound to get people fearful and protective of the status quo. Such is the current case with AI and its practical application in multiple industries, particularly in the space of visual media arts, but rather than turn away, renowned filmmaker and technological innovator James Cameron is choosing to lean in. Last year, he joined the board of the generative AI company Stability AI and during a recent interview on the “Boz to the Future” podcast, he explained how the tech’s ability to shorten VFX workflow could truly be a game-changer…
