Massachusetts Institute of Technology astronomers have discovered a planet roughly 140 light-years from Earth — but it’s quickly disintegrating. The planet, which scientists have tagged as BD+05 4868 Ab, is located so close to the sun that it completes a full orbit every 30.5 hours, according to MIT News. As a result, it’s likely covered in magma, causing the planet to evaporate and shed the equivalent of one Mount Everest’s worth of surface materials during every orbit. The astronomers estimate the planet may disintegrate fully within the next 1 to 2 million years.Debris trails behind the planet in a comet-like fashion,…
Between 2013 and 2024, global private sector investment in artificial intelligence (AI) has surged, with a few countries leading the charge. Recent data reveals that 12 nations accounted for the bulk of global AI funding during this period, underscoring a growing international race for technological leadership. The United States leads by a wide margin, raising $471 billion—more than the rest of the world combined. China follows with $119 billion, while the United Kingdom, Canada, and Israel round out the top five with $28 billion and $15 billion each, respectively. Learn More Liquid AI, the Boston-based foundation model startup spun out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), is seeking to move the tech industry beyond its reliance on the Transformer architecture underpinning most popular large language models (LLMs) such as OpenAI’s GPT series and Google’s Gemini family. Yesterday, the company announced “Hyena Edge,” a new convolution-based, multi-hybrid model designed for smartphones and other edge devices in advance of the International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR) 2025. The conference, one of the premier…
In the battle between two “agentic” coding tools — Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex CLI — the latter appears to be fostering more developer goodwill than the former. That’s at least partly because Anthropic has issued takedown notices to a developer trying to reverse-engineer Claude Code, which is under a more restrictive usage license than Codex CLI. Claude Code and Codex CLI are dueling tools that accomplish much of the same thing: allow developers to tap into the power of AI models running in the cloud to complete various coding tasks. Anthropic and OpenAI released them within months of…
#ext5 #transferlearning #exmix The T5 model has been a staple for NLP research for the last years. Both its size and its approach to formulate all NLP tasks as prompt-based language modeling make it a convenient choice to tackle new challenges and provides a strong baseline for most current datasets. ExT5 pushes T5 to its limits by pre-training not only on self-supervised mask filling, but also at the same time on 107 different supervised NLP tasks, which is their new ExMix dataset. The resulting model compares very favorably to T5 when fine-tuned to downstream tasks. OUTLINE: 0:00 – Intro &…
