Viral 2024 meme by Aleksander MolakAnthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei has learned from the masters that the way to get press is to say outrageous things. Podcasters are particularly vulnerable. (The New York Times apparently loves this kind of thing too, but I’ll get to that later.)A lot of prominent podcasters eat these magical pronouncements up; they want to have been there, in the front row, when AGI happens, and they rarely utter a skeptical word. Instead, they simply repeat these prognostications (which are really optimistic dates largely pulled out of hats) as fact. Here for example is the popular Dwarkesh…
[Submitted on 3 Jun 2021 (v1), last revised 25 Oct 2021 (this version, v2)] View a PDF of the paper titled A Little Robustness Goes a Long Way: Leveraging Robust Features for Targeted Transfer Attacks, by Jacob M. Springer and 2 other authors View PDF Abstract:Adversarial examples for neural network image classifiers are known to be transferable: examples optimized to be misclassified by a source classifier are often misclassified as well by classifiers with different architectures. However, targeted adversarial examples — optimized to be classified as a chosen target class — tend to be less transferable between architectures. While prior…
Reading the minds of LLMsInterpreting and controlling models has long been a significant challenge. Our research ‘Representation Engineering: A Top-Down Approach to AI Transparency’ explores a new way of understanding traits like honesty, power seeking, and morality in LLMs. We show that these traits can be identified live at the point of output, and they can also be controlled. This method differs from mechanistic approaches which focus on bottom-up interpretations of node to node connections. In contrast, representation engineering looks at larger chunks of representations and higher-level mechanisms to understand models. Overall, we believe that this ‘top-down’ method makes exciting…

The news: Synchron, an Australian-founded competitor to Elon Musk’s Neuralink, is building a foundational AI model trained on brain signals. The AI, called Chiral, was showcased at Nvidia’s GTC conference in San Jose. It’s built to work with Apple’s Vision Pro headset and Nvidia’s Holoscan medical AI platform. The context: Synchron is a leader in the nascent brain-computer-interface (BCI) industry. It creates devices that read brain activity and translate that into commands for a nearby computer. Its “stentrode” BCI has already been implanted in over 10 patients who, suffering from afflictions like motor neurone disease, are unable to use their hands. A new paper co-authored by the former CEO of Google has outlined a future where AI training data centers could be blown up by foreign nations.Eric Schmidt, along with Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang and the Center for AI Safety’s Dan Hendrycks, warned that “destabilizing AI developments could rupture the balance of power and raise the odds of great-power conflict.”The paper lays out the concept of Mutual Assured AI Malfunction (MAIM), modeled on nuclear mutual assured destruction (MAD), where any “aggressive bid for unilateral AI dominance is met with preventive sabotage by rivals.”This could involve espionage, cyberattacks, or kinetic strikes…
