Chesnot / Contributor / Getty Images America’s tech giants aren’t showing signs of slowing AI spending plans despite a stretch of economic uncertainty that has meant tough times for technology shares. After Meta Platforms (META) late Wednesday reported better-than-expected quarterly earnings, touting its advertising revenue growth, the social media giant said it plans to boost its capital expenditures this year to $64 billion to $72 billion to grow its AI capacity. CEO Mark Zuckerberg told investors on a conference call that he believes the opportunities for the company in AI are “staggering.” Meta is boosting its planned investments both to…
A new paper from AI lab Cohere, Stanford, MIT, and Ai2 accuses LM Arena, the organization behind the popular crowdsourced AI benchmark Chatbot Arena, of helping a select group of AI companies achieve better leaderboard scores at the expense of rivals. According to the authors, LM Arena allowed some industry-leading AI companies like Meta, OpenAI, Google, and Amazon to privately test several variants of AI models, then not publish the scores of the lowest performers. This made it easier for these companies to achieve a top spot on the platform’s leaderboard, though the opportunity was not afforded to every firm,…
(Bloomberg) — Xiaomi Corp. unveiled its own open-source AI model, joining the growing ranks of Chinese tech leaders hoping to make a splash in a burgeoning field endorsed by Beijing. Most Read from Bloomberg The smartphone and EV maker publicized the MiMo reasoning model, which like DeepSeek’s R1 mimics the way humans think through problems. Xiaomi printed stats on WeChat showing it surpassed OpenAI’s o1-mini and Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.’s Qwen platforms in benchmark tests, which Bloomberg hasn’t independently verified. Xiaomi debuted MiMo a day after Alibaba unveiled the latest version of its own flagship model, amplifying a race between…
BNP Paribas has renewed its partnership with IBM Cloud, extending their collaboration for an additional ten years. This agreement aims to accelerate the bank’s cloud-native strategy and support the advancement of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI). The partnership is part of BNP Paribas’ technology investment and multicloud strategy. Since 2019, BNP Paribas has hosted IBM Cloud within its data centres, a move that has contributed to the establishment of a technological infrastructure essential for the bank’s digital transformation. After integrating Meta AI into WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, Meta is rolling out a stand-alone AI app. Unveiled at Meta’s LlamaCon event on Tuesday, this app allows users to access Meta AI in an app, similar to the ChatGPT app and other AI assistant apps. To win over users, Meta is trying to leverage what makes it different from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic — Meta already has a sense of who you are, what you like, and who you hang out with based on years of data that you’ve likely shared on Facebook or Instagram. Meta’s AI app…
Google on Tuesday is releasing three new AI experiments aimed at helping people learn to speak a new language in a more personalized way. While the experiments are still in the early stages, it’s possible that the company is looking to take on Duolingo with the help of Gemini, Google’s multimodal large language model. The first experiment helps you quickly learn specific phrases you need in the moment, while the second experiment helps you sound less formal and more like a local. The third experiment allows you to use your camera to learn new words based on your surroundings. Image…
Freepik, the online graphic design platform, unveiled a new “open” AI image model on Tuesday that the company says was trained exclusively on commercially licensed, “safe-for-work” images. The model, called F Lite, contains around 10 billion parameters — parameters being the internal components that make up the model. F Lite was developed in partnership with AI startup Fal.ai and trained using 64 Nvidia H100 GPUs over the course of two months, according to Freepik. F Lite joins a small and growing collection of generative AI models trained on licensed data. Generative AI is at the center of copyright lawsuits against…
Chinese tech company Alibaba on Monday released Qwen3, a family of AI models that the company claims can match and, in some cases, outperform the best models available from Google and OpenAI. Most of the models are — or soon will be — available for download under an “open” license on AI dev platform Hugging Face and GitHub. They range in size from 0.6 billion parameters to 235 billion parameters. (Parameters roughly correspond to a model’s problem-solving skills, and models with more parameters generally perform better than those with fewer parameters.) The rise of China-originated model series like Qwen have…
Asia-Pacific businesses are frantically trying to explore how to best use AI to improve productivity, according to new survey data from Microsoft, which the company’s new Asia president credits to the region’s rapid climb up the value chain. “We’ve been through an inflection point where the two decades of ‘Made in’—’Made in China’ and ‘Made in Vietnam’—is shifting to the decade of ‘Created in,’” Microsoft Asia President Rodrigo Kede Lima told Fortune. Asian firms are doing more design and technological work, which is creating a foundation for AI adoption. Asia files 70% of all patents, is home to two-thirds of…
