The Massachusetts Institute of Technology said it’s preparing for “significant new financial pressures,” including an increased tax on its endowment and uncertainty about federal science funding under President Donald Trump.“Dealing with financial realities is our focus,” MIT President Sally Kornbluth said in a letter to the campus community Tuesday, promising to provide additional details about the severity of the challenges in the coming weeks.MIT’s warning follows similar messages from other prominent US universities after months of pressure from the Trump administration. Last month, Cornell University warned of “urgent action” and signaled more job cuts, Princeton University said it’s implementing a…
Data storage company Vast Data Inc., which is in the process of transforming itself into an “operating system” for artificial intelligence, today announced a new capability called Vast SyncEngine. The company says it acts as a “universal data router,” combining a highly performant onboarding system for unstructured data with a global catalog for building AI data pipelines. Available at no additional cost to existing customers, Vast SyncEngine is designed to simplify headaches around discovering and mobilizing distributed, unstructured datasets and software-as-a-service tools, so these data sources can quickly be plugged into their AI applications. Vast SyncEngine is the latest addition to…
The School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York will be owned by an alumni-affiliated nonprofit following a period of financial difficulties and a recent unionization effort by its faculty. On September 1, the Rhodes family, which has owned it nearly 80 years, transferred ownership to the SVA Alumni Society, a nonprofit that has funded student scholarships since 1972. The school’s longtime president, David Rhodes, has promised that “day-to-day life for students, administration, faculty, and staff would not change,” per a release. BEIJING (AP) — The body camera hung from the top of the IV drip, recording the slightest twitch made by Yang Guoliang as he lay bloody and paralyzed in a hospital bed after a police beating with bricks. By then, surveillance was nothing new for the Yang family in rural China, snared in an intricate network based on U.S. technology that spies on them and predicts what they’ll do. Their train tickets, hotel bookings, purchases, text messages and phone calls are forwarded to the government. Their house is ringed with more than a dozen cameras. They’ve tried to go to…
At yet another splashy event, Apple on Tuesday introduced its latest lineup of iPhones: the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, and a new slimmer version dubbed the iPhone Air. The “Air” branding is meant to bring to mind other lightweight — and sometimes less expensive — Apple products like the MacBook Air and iPad Air. But it also recalls a time when smartphone makers were chasing an ever-thinner phone. In the AI era, however, it’s not necessarily the device’s size that matters; it’s what the software it runs can do. On this front, Apple has lagged its competitors. …
Cameco is the best way to play the nuclear power resurgence with a business model that spans the value chain from uranium mines to reactors, according to the equity research firm CLSA. CLSA on Monday initiated coverage of Cameco with an outperform rating. It sees the company’s stock hitting $102 over the next 12 months, implying 32% upside from the last close of $77.74 per share. Cameco has gained more than 50% this year as demand for nuclear power grows worldwide. “Cameco is the most comprehensive play for the nuclear rejuvenation theme,” CLSA analyst Max Hopkins told clients in a…
Key Takeaways IBM is gaining from hybrid cloud and AI demand, supported by the HashiCorp acquisition.Qualcomm expands in 5G, automotive, gaming and AI PCs, but faces stiff chip market competition.IBM trades cheaper than QCOM, with a stronger price performance and a steadier free cash flow outlook. International Business Machines Corporation (IBM Quick QuoteIBM – Free Report) and Qualcomm Incorporated (QCOM Quick QuoteQCOM – Free Report) are tech legacy firms pivoting toward cutting-edge growth areas of either cloud computing and AI (artificial intelligence) workloads, or chips and patent-driven innovations. In recent weeks, stories about the dire state of the art market have tended to obscure the fact that for many seasoned art dealers now is less a time to panic than one in which you sit down and figure out how to keep going. At a time when the headlines are dominated by galleries that are closing, others are making strategic moves, like relocating. One of those is Cristin Tierney, who has built her business on being small but serious, and who last week opened a brand new space in New York’s now-dominant art district, Tribeca. Hers is a…
Unified multimodal understanding and generation models recently have achieve significant improvement in image generation capability, yet a large gap remains in instruction following and detail preservation compared to systems that tightly couple comprehension with generation such as GPT-4o. Motivated by recent advances in interleaving reasoning, we explore whether such reasoning can further improve Text-to-Image (T2I) generation. We introduce Interleaving Reasoning Generation (IRG), a framework that alternates between text-based thinking and image synthesis: the model first produces a text-based thinking to guide an initial image, then reflects on the result to refine fine-grained details, visual quality, and aesthetics while preserving semantics.…
As generative AI continues to transform how enterprises operate—and develop net new innovations—the infrastructure demands for training and deploying AI models have grown exponentially. Traditional infrastructure approaches are struggling to keep pace with today’s computational requirements, network demands, and resilience needs of modern AI workloads. At AWS, we’re also seeing a transformation across the technology landscape as organizations move from experimental AI projects to production deployments at scale. This shift demands infrastructure that can deliver unprecedented performance while maintaining security, reliability, and cost-effectiveness. That’s why we’ve made significant investments in networking innovations, specialized compute resources, and resilient infrastructure that’s designed…
