Metrics drive the ML field. As such, if we want to influence the field or popularize new subfields, we must define the metrics that correlate with progress on the problems we care about. Formalizing these metrics into benchmarks will be crucial to capturing the attention of researchers and driving progress.Building good benchmarks is difficult, in large part because benchmarks exhibit many of the properties that produce power law outcomes. First, implicit in every benchmark design are a large number of multiplicative processes. If even one facet (e.g. ease of use, cost to evaluate, connection of the benchmark with a real…
The news: Synchron, an Australian-founded competitor to Elon Musk’s Neuralink, is building a foundational AI model trained on brain signals. The AI, called Chiral, was showcased at Nvidia’s GTC conference in San Jose. It’s built to work with Apple’s Vision Pro headset and Nvidia’s Holoscan medical AI platform. The context: Synchron is a leader in the nascent brain-computer-interface (BCI) industry. It creates devices that read brain activity and translate that into commands for a nearby computer. Its “stentrode” BCI has already been implanted in over 10 patients who, suffering from afflictions like motor neurone disease, are unable to use their hands. A video…
A new paper co-authored by the former CEO of Google has outlined a future where AI training data centers could be blown up by foreign nations.Eric Schmidt, along with Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang and the Center for AI Safety’s Dan Hendrycks, warned that “destabilizing AI developments could rupture the balance of power and raise the odds of great-power conflict.”The paper lays out the concept of Mutual Assured AI Malfunction (MAIM), modeled on nuclear mutual assured destruction (MAD), where any “aggressive bid for unilateral AI dominance is met with preventive sabotage by rivals.”This could involve espionage, cyberattacks, or kinetic strikes…
A survey of 120 ‘inhouse counsel and legal leaders’ has found that although there are some speed bumps, adoption of legal AI tools is gaining pace. That in turn promises changing client perceptions and improved internal efficiencies. For example, the survey by ALSP Factor found that ‘25.3% have already spent between $100,000 to $500,000 on domain-specific legal AI tools; and close to half (43.4%) have upgraded existing legal tech licenses to access particular AI features.’ As with an earlier survey by LegalOn, which found approaching 20% of inhouse teams using a legal AI tool for contract review now, such numbers…

Kay Firth-Butterfield is a globally recognised leader in ethical artificial intelligence and a distinguished AI ethics speaker. As the former head of AI and Machine Learning at the World Economic Forum (WEF) and one of the foremost voices in AI governance, she has spent her career advocating for technology that enhances, rather than harms, society. We spoke to Kay to discuss the promise and pitfalls of generative AI, the future of the Metaverse, and how organisations can prepare for a decade of unprecedented digital transformation. Generative AI has captured global attention, but there’s still a great deal of misunderstanding around…
Chinese tech giants like Alibaba (BABA), Tencent (TCEHY), and ByteDance have placed over $16 billion in orders for Nvidia’s (NVDA) H20 AI chips during the first quarter of 2025, according to The Information. The rush in demand comes amid concerns that the U.S. may soon ban the sale of these chips to China. While Nvidia has not commented, these orders could significantly boost revenue if the company manages to deliver the chips before any restrictions take effect.Don’t Miss Our End of Quarter Offers: The H20 is currently allowed in China, but it’s less powerful than Nvidia’s Blackwell chips, which are…
We propose a unified framework that integrates object detection (OD) and visual grounding (VG) for remote sensing (RS) imagery. To support conventional OD and establish an intuitive prior for VG task, we fine-tune an open-set object detector using referring expression data, framing it as a partially supervised OD task. In the first stage, we construct a graph representation of each image, comprising object queries, class embeddings, and proposal locations. Then, our task-aware architecture processes this graph to perform the VG task. The model consists of: (i) a multi-branch network that integrates spatial, visual, and categorical features to generate task-aware proposals,…
The goal of this blog post is to show you how a large language model (LLM) can be used to perform tasks that require multi-step dynamic reasoning and execution. Examples of tasks that require dynamic reasoning and execution are answering questions of the form “What is the average length of stay for patients with [specific condition] across different hospitals?” or “How do prescription trends for [specific drug] vary across different regions?” Traditionally, answering these queries required the expertise of business intelligence specialists and data engineers, often resulting in time-consuming processes and potential bottlenecks. However, the advances in LLMs have opened…
Stability AI speaks of a “multi-view video generation with 3D camera control”. This refers to an AI model that can convert photos into 3D models. These in turn can be viewed from all sides, enabling an immersive view. Stable Virtual Camera is still a research preview. Stability AI uses a diffusion model to create the 3D videos. These are AI models in which images are generated point by point using noise. A single photo or up to 32 images can be used as input. The generated videos are available with different camera paths, such as “dynamic”, “spiral”, “dolly zoom”, “pan”…
