arXiv:2504.14045v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Metacognition, the capacity to monitor and evaluate one’s own knowledge and performance, is foundational to human decision-making, learning, and communication. As large language models (LLMs) become increasingly embedded in high-stakes decision contexts, it is critical to assess whether, how, and to what extent they exhibit metacognitive abilities. Here, we provide an overview of current knowledge of LLMs’ metacognitive capacities, how they might be studied, and how they relate to our knowledge of metacognition in humans. We show that while humans and LLMs can sometimes appear quite aligned in their metacognitive capacities and behaviors, it is…

Researchers from Stanford University early today published the latest edition of their annual AI Index Report, detailing the growing influence of artificial intelligence technologies on our society and the global economy. The Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, known as Stanford HAI, has been publishing its annual reports on the state of the AI industry since 2017. This year’s edition, the eighth, is the “most comprehensive” report to date, spanning more than 430 pages. The authors say it’s arriving at a critical juncture as the influence of AI across society rapidly accelerates with the emergence of increasingly capable and sophisticated…
IBM is “reviewing the implications of these shifts in trade policy and evaluating any potential impact on our pricing,” a spokesperson said. Potential early tariff impacts. A new Z refresh cycle. And momentum in the Red Hat division and newly acquired HashiCorp one. These are just some of the subjects expected to come up when IBM reports first quarter earnings for its 2025 fiscal year Wednesday. The quarter covers the three months ended March 31. One of the most likely subjects of discussion Wednesday is the behavior of IBM customers amid global tariffs. Analysts will likely come with questions on…
Massachusetts Institute of Technology astronomers have discovered a planet roughly 140 light-years from Earth — but it’s quickly disintegrating. The planet, which scientists have tagged as BD+05 4868 Ab, is located so close to the sun that it completes a full orbit every 30.5 hours, according to MIT News. As a result, it’s likely covered in magma, causing the planet to evaporate and shed the equivalent of one Mount Everest’s worth of surface materials during every orbit. The astronomers estimate the planet may disintegrate fully within the next 1 to 2 million years.Debris trails behind the planet in a comet-like fashion,…
But the topline figures obscure a fragmented regulatory approach The government wants the UK to provide an agile, adaptive environment for AI developers. Is the existing regulatory framework up to it? Following on from yesterday’s coverage in Computing of Labour Party proposals to manage and regulate AI technology development, the government yesterday set out it’s approach in response to the consultation it published last March. Last years’ white paper focused on an agile, pro-innovation approach to AI regulation. The government made clear that it wanted to regulate with a light touch. A crucial aspect of this light touch regulation was…
Dennis Xu is a repeat tech startup founder, but he’s the first to admit he’s not a programmer. After co-founding AI note-taking app Mem — one of OpenAI’s earliest venture investments — he has now launched a new startup called Adaptive Computer. Its grandiose mission is nothing less than a complete reimagining of personal computer software. He wants non-programmers to be using full-featured apps that they’ve created themselves, simply by entering a text prompt into Adaptive’s no-code web-app platform. To make that happen, Xu and co-founder Mike Soylu just announced a $7 million seed round, led by Pebblebed with participation…
