TESS, launched in 2018, is the first telescope to scan the entire sky for planets by shifting its field-of-view every month. The disintegrating planet, named BD+05 4868 Ab, is one of just four planets of its kind that scientists have discovered.Astronomers said the cause of BD+05 4868 Ab’s rapid disintegration is its proximity to its star — 50 times closer than Earth is to the sun — and its relatively small size.“The planet got so close to its star that the heat started evaporating its surface,“ said Avi Shporer, a collaborator on the discovery and a research scientist at the MIT…
Between 2013 and 2024, global private sector investment in artificial intelligence (AI) has surged, with a few countries leading the charge. Recent data reveals that 12 nations accounted for the bulk of global AI funding during this period, underscoring a growing international race for technological leadership. The United States leads by a wide margin, raising $471 billion—more than the rest of the world combined. China follows with $119 billion, while the United Kingdom, Canada, and Israel round out the top five with $28 billion and $15 billion each, respectively. Elon Musk’s xAI Holdings is in talks to raise $20 billion in fresh funding, potentially valuing the AI and social media combo at over $120 billion, according to a new Bloomberg report that says talks are in the “early stages.” If successful, the deal would constitute the the second-largest startup funding round ever, behind only OpenAI’s $40 billion raise last month. The funding could help alleviate X’s substantial debt burden, which is costing the company a whopping $200 million monthly in servicing fees, per Bloomberg’s sources, with annual interest expenses exceeding $1.3 billion by the end of last year. #deeplearning #neuralarchitecturesearch #metalearning Deep Neural Networks are usually trained from a given parameter initialization using SGD until convergence at a local optimum. This paper goes a different route: Given a novel network architecture for a known dataset, can we predict the final network parameters without ever training them? The authors build a Graph-Hypernetwork and train on a novel dataset of various DNN-architectures to predict high-performing weights. The results show that not only can the GHN predict weights with non-trivial performance, but it can also generalize beyond the distribution of training architectures to predict weights for networks that are much larger,…

With its plan for a “European AI continent”, the EU Commission wants to catch up with other AI locations around the world: In terms of cloud infrastructure, Europe is currently equipped with three times fewer data centers than the USA, according to Commission circles. Corresponding capacities should therefore be created throughout Europe. The Commission wants to boost the development of AI in the EU with up to 200 billion euros. Of this, 20 billion euros are to be made available for up to five new “AI Gigafactories”. However, it is unclear how much of this will actually be provided from…
