California’s state senate gave final approval early on Saturday morning to a major AI safety bill setting new transparency requirements on large companies. As described by its author, state senator Scott Wiener, SB 53 “requires large AI labs to be transparent about their safety protocols, creates whistleblower protections for [employees] at AI labs & creates a public cloud to expand compute access (CalCompute).” The bill now goes to California Governor Gavin Newsom to sign or veto. He has not commented publicly on SB 53, but last year, he vetoed a more expansive safety bill also authored by Wiener, while signing…

AI-leveraged drug development has become an $18 billion industry, but companies in the sector are experiencing some hardships. Beyond efforts to convenience investors their drugs are safe and effective, venture capital funding is drying up. Experts say this is due to macroeconomic and regulatory challenges and has less to do with failures from the technology itself. Moonshot hopes of artificial intelligence being used to expedite the development of drugs are coming back down to earth. More than $18 billion has flooded into more than 200 biotechnology companies touting AI to expedite development, with 75 drugs or vaccines entering clinical trials,…
I am officially two weeks into Tesla ownership, having picked up my Model Y Long Range All-Wheel-Drive on Saturday, August 30. I have many things I really love, and I’ll do my best to come up with a few things I don’t, although I find that to be very difficult currently. With any new car, I don’t really find things I dislike within the first few months; the novelty of a shiny new vehicle usually wears off eventually. In the past, I’ve had a car I only kept for nine months, but I loved it for the first two months.…

IBM’s quantum catalyst may be starting to come back in vogue. IBM’s (IBM -1.34%) efforts to capitalize on the rise of generative AI aren’t its only big bet on future technology. Alongside this, the company has also been investing heavily in quantum computing. Quantum computing utilizes quantum mechanics to solve complex problems more quickly than classical computers. The potential use cases of this technology are extensive, including applications in areas like artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, drug development, and even areas like sustainable energy and traffic optimization. However, with the perception that this catalyst, at best, will only start to positively…
The book report is now a thing of the past. Take-home tests and essays are becoming obsolete.High school and college educators around the country say student use of artificial intelligence has become so prevalent that to assign writing outside of the classroom is like asking students to cheat.“The cheating is off the charts. It’s the worst I’ve seen in my entire career,” says Casey Cuny, who has taught English for 23 years. Educators are no longer wondering if students will outsource schoolwork to AI chatbots. “Anything you send home, you have to assume is being AI’ed.” The question now is…

Tesla is officially ditching the development of a key Cybertruck charging feature, and the reason is very obvious, all things considered. The Cybertruck is among the most unique vehicles available on the market, and, like all Tesla vehicles, it has continued to improve through Over-the-Air software updates that enhance performance, safety, and other technological features. However, the development of some features, while great on paper, turns out to be more difficult than expected. One of these features is the presence of wireless charging on the all-electric pickup, a capability Tesla has been working to integrate across its entire vehicle lineup.…
