How well-supported are the claims made by AI tools?Oscar Wong/Getty Images Generative AI tools, and the deep research agents and search engines powered by them, frequently make unsupported and biased claims that aren’t backed up by the sources they cite. That’s according to an analysis which found that about one-third of answers provided by the AI tools aren’t backed up by reliable sources. For OpenAI’s GPT 4.5, the figure was even higher, at 47 per cent. Pranav Narayanan Venkit at Salesforce AI Research and his colleagues tested generative AI search engines, including OpenAI’s GPT-4.5 and 5, You.com, Perplexity and Microsoft’s…

Stanford Law School has launched a new research project, the ‘Legal Innovation Through Frontier Technology Lab’, or Liftlab, to explore how AI can reshape legal services for the better. The project led by Professor Julian Nyarko and Executive Director Megan Ma (pictured), stressed that the goal was not just to make legal services ‘faster and cheaper, but better and more widely accessible’. Although, one could say that to make legal services more accessible will mean making them more affordable, and in turn faster and easier to access. Either way, it’s a welcome move and builds on the work that Stanford’s…
Semiconductor equipment manufacturer ASML and Mistral AI announced a partnership to explore the use of AI models across ASML’s product portfolio to enhance its holistic lithography systems. In addition, ASML was the lead investor in the latest funding round in the AI startup and now holds an 11% share on a fully diluted basis in Mistral AI. The deal holds a massive symbolic weight in the era of sovereign AI and trade barriers. Although not big in the great scheme of things and especially compared with the eye-watering sums usually exchanged in the bubbly AI world, it brings together Europe’s…

OpenAI’s latest research paper diagnoses exactly why ChatGPT and other large language models can make things up – known in the world of artificial intelligence as “hallucination”. It also reveals why the problem may be unfixable, at least as far as consumers are concerned. The paper provides the most rigorous mathematical explanation yet for why these models confidently state falsehoods. It demonstrates that these aren’t just an unfortunate side effect of the way that AIs are currently trained, but are mathematically inevitable. The issue can partly be explained by mistakes in the underlying data used to train the AIs. But using mathematical…
AI won’t replace customer service agents at Fortune 500 companies, at least according to Gartner. Despite popular belief and the many industry signs pointing to a complete overhaul of human labor in the workforce, Gartner predicts that a hybrid support system is expected to lead the way. The report likely encourages many employees to breathe a fresh sigh of relief, as many have repeatedly stated that human agents will be essential in service. However, the shift towards AI-powered operations has led to the fear that businesses are not on the same page. The predictions are in: AI won’t replace human…
When devious young hackers penetrated the computer networks of major U.S. retailers and suppliers earlier this year, it was a significant test of the quiet cybersecurity collaboration happening among some of America’s best-known brands and their much more obscure partners. Amid increasingly worrisome attacks on life- and safety-critical sectors like energy, water and healthcare, cyber threats facing the retail and hospitality sector often get significantly less attention. But the retail industry is the country’s largest private-sector employer, making its resilience vital to the U.S. economy. And over the years, the Retail and Hospitality Information Sharing and Analysis Center (RH-ISAC) has…
