AI in recruitment: OpenAI’s new jobs platform targets workers and small businesses

OpenAI is planning to launch a new job marketplace, an online platform in which businesses and employees will be matched by artificial intelligence.

The company’s CEO, Sam Altman, informed TechCrunch that the platform, named OpenAI Jobs Platform, will be launched at some point during next year.

The way it differs is not only the look but the motor behind it, algorithms trained to match what companies require with what applicants are capable of providing.

Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, explained the idea in a blog post. She said the aim is simple: ‘help find the perfect matches’. Behind this phrase lies a bigger shift.

The platform will not just serve tech giants or consulting firms. It will also work with small businesses, local governments, and even community organisations.

As per the announcement, partners already in the pipeline include John Deere, Walmart, Accenture, and Boston Consulting Group.

One aspect of the plan is to provide a level playing field.

Small businesses are frequently unable to attract the right talent because they are pitted against large rivals with more extensive budgets.

OpenAI Jobs will provide them with direct access to AI professionals and qualified applicants. That, the company contends, can stimulate local economies.

The platform also has an educational arm.

OpenAI Academy, with already over two million users, will be linked to the jobs portal.

Certifications will be provided, everything from using AI in the workplace to more advanced training such as custom jobs and prompt engineering.

The certifications will be free and supported by partners such as Walmart. OpenAI claims it wants to certify 10 million Americans by 2030.

During a dinner with journalists, Altman emphasised that this platform is part of an overall expansion.

OpenAI is no longer the “ChatGPT company” only. Initiatives like a browser and an eventual social media app are also considered. Simo, who is leading the jobs project, will also be leading some of these experiments.

For the time being, the focus is on the job market. An industry long dominated by a single platform may soon have a new competitor, fashioned not on rsums but on the imperatives of machines trained to match people and work.
