The Getty appointed the Getty Foundation director Joan Weinstein to the newly created role of vice president for Getty-wide program planning today. Though her appointment is effectively immediately, she will continue as foundation director until a successor is appointed.

In her new role, Weinstein will develop strategy across the institution’s four divisions: the Museum, Research Institute, Conservation Institute, and Foundation. Her efforts will be directed toward strengthening a range of directives such as the Getty’s art historical scholarship and community partnerships.

“I’m deeply honored to serve in this new role and look forward to working even more closely with talented staff across Getty,” Weinstein said in a statement. “At a time when the arts and humanities face daunting new challenges, we have a shared opportunity to show why they matter, invigorate scholarship, engage new audiences, and better serve our communities.”

Weinstein has been director of the Getty Foundation since 2019. In that role, she was responsible for the Getty’s grantmaking programs, which disseminate money to museums, as well as to researchers leading art historical and conservation efforts.

She is perhaps best known, however, for co-directing PST ART, a collaboration initiated by the Getty in 2011 that has grown to include more than 70 participating cultural organizations across Southern California, occurring every five years. The most recent edition, Art & Science Collide (2024–25), brought together the work of more than 800 artists across exhibitions and programs for more than four million attendees.

Weinstein has also overseen the Getty Foundation’s community partnerships, including the recent LA Arts Community Fire Relief Fund, which awarded more than $16 million to artists and arts workers impacted by the Eaton and Palisades Fires earlier this year. In 2020, she also spearheaded the LA Arts Recovery Fund, which provided more than $36 million in Covid relief to 90 arts nonprofits across Los Angeles County.

“As Getty continues to elevate the work of our four programs, no one can match Joan in operating within and across divisions to achieve our ambitious goals,” Katherine E. Fleming, president and CEO of Getty, said in a statement. “Her deep knowledge of Getty and the fields in which we are active, combined with her bold leadership and strategic imagination, promise to bring our collective work to new levels.”

Prior to 2019, Weinstein was the Getty Foundation’s senior program officer, associate director, and deputy director. Under her direction, the Getty launched the Connecting Art Histories, Keeping It Modern, and MOSAIKON initiatives.

Throughout her career, she has worked at a number of professional organizations and nonprofit boards, among them the Mike Kelley Foundation of the Arts. She was recently inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
