NRI PULSE STAFF REPORT

San Francisco, CA, October 6, 2025: Artificial intelligence research startup Anthropic, the company behind the Claude family of AI models, has appointed Rahul Patil as its new Chief Technology Officer (CTO). The leadership change marks a major strategic shift for the San Francisco-based firm as it scales up its AI infrastructure and global operations.

Patil succeeds Sam McCandlish, one of Anthropic’s co-founders, who will move into the role of Chief Architect, focusing on model pre-training and large-scale AI research. Both Patil and McCandlish will report directly to Daniela Amodei, Anthropic’s president and co-founder.

According to the company, the restructuring is aimed at bringing its product, infrastructure, and inference engineering teams into closer alignment as it continues developing advanced AI systems. The move is seen as part of Anthropic’s broader effort to improve the reliability, efficiency, and safety of its AI models, which compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google DeepMind’s Gemini.

Before joining Anthropic, Patil served as CTO at Stripe, where he led global engineering and operations. He has also held senior positions at Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services, bringing over two decades of experience in building scalable cloud systems.

Born and raised in Bengaluru, India, Patil holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science from PES University, a master’s degree from Arizona State University, and an MBA from the University of Washington.

In a statement, Patil said he was “excited to help advance Anthropic’s mission of developing AI systems that are reliable, interpretable, and steerable,” emphasizing that strong infrastructure is the backbone of responsible AI development.

Industry observers say the appointment underscores Anthropic’s focus on strengthening its technical foundation as it races to scale its next-generation models, Claude 3.5 and beyond, across consumer and enterprise applications.

Anthropic, founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers including siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei, has rapidly emerged as one of the world’s leading AI labs. The company counts Google, Amazon, and Salesforce Ventures among its key investors and recently secured billions in funding to expand its AI training and deployment capabilities.

With Patil at the helm of technology, Anthropic aims to accelerate innovation while ensuring that safety and scalability remain central to its growth strategy.
