Sam Altman-led OpenAI (PC:OPAIQ) is taking on Chinese short-form video giant TikTok with its own artificial intelligence (AI)-video generator app. OpenAI’s stand-alone social media app will be based on its video generation AI model Sora 2.

The app is similar to ByteDance’s (PC:BYTDC) TikTok in the sense that it hosts a vertical video feed with swipe-to-scroll navigation. However, the main difference is that OpenAI’s app will only create AI-generated videos, preventing users from uploading images or videos from their devices.
Here’s How the Sora 2 App Works
Users can create video clips up to 10 seconds long, while TikTok allows users to create 15-second videos as well as upload clips of up to 10 minutes. The news was first reported by Wired, citing a review of internal company documents.
The Sora 2 App also includes a feature that lets users verify their identity by confirming their appearance. Once verified, they can use their own likeness in videos, and other users can also tag them and include their likeness in clips. Users will be notified whenever someone else uses their likeness.
A Strategic Bet in the Short-Form Video Market
OpenAI’s move comes amid ongoing discussions in the U.S. about banning or selling TikTok’s American operations. While a ban remains unlikely, OpenAI may see an opportunity to capture attention if TikTok faces restrictions. The app is currently being tested internally, with employee feedback reportedly positive.
OpenAI appears to be aiming for a ChatGPT-like breakthrough in video generation. The company believes that the Sora 2 App will allow people to engage with AI-generated video in a way that transforms their experience of the technology, much like how ChatGPT revealed the possibilities of AI-generated text.
Competition in the Video App Market
OpenAI’s Sora 2 App will compete directly with similar apps from tech giants Meta Platforms (META) and Alphabet (GOOGL). Meta recently launched a new feature in its Meta AI app called Vibes, which is designed for making and sharing short AI-made videos. Earlier this month, Google said it was adding a special version of its newest video tool, Veo 3, into YouTube.
Notably, Sora will use copyrighted material, though entertainment studios can choose to opt out. OpenAI also introduced new parental controls for ChatGPT yesterday, but it’s still unclear what kind of parental controls will be available in the Sora 2 App.
